I think that's the real reason all guitars wish to be long fingered, not short fingers like me.
You can always pay the bills if your fingers are long enough to play bass, I don't know if I'd pass that audition.

Congrats.

Congratulations on being in a band!...

I was playing my bass last week; I said to my wife "What do you think"?

She replied "You should be banned". Is that kinda similar?....

Heh heh! I know you were only kidding, BroadMaster - and you know I was too!....

FWIW, I thought you were absolutely right. I dared to suggest that things may have been more appropriate in other forums a few times - and ended up getting flamed.

Good to see that there are two of us like-minded souls....

I'm with ya fmsm. Sometimes you just gotta type it anyway. I guess with as many members as are reading and posting in, it's inevitable to draw somebody's bad day vents every now and then. What the heck, I just soldier on. My little path is narrow.

I've been meaning to start a BDC thread regarding the local band gig market from wherever you are. How's pay compared to 5 years ago, etc? I think I'll drop over and do that.

Thanks I'll check the local music store. Classic Country Bass is the lost are of country music I do agree. There is some to be said about keeping is simple. Dad taught me how to play bass.
He said "If you have four strings you're not a lead player." and "if you play Bass you play all night, not just the intro's and solo's"

Although I do like songs with a unique bass line, like Longview, Workin Man Blues, and Houston.

If it wasn't for country music I'd go crazy!

Having a bass rig around is always a good idea. I've been playing guitar for 13 years and bass for about nine. I am a different animal an each instrument stylistically since I had always played electric and upright in my middle school and high school jazz bands while on guitar I ended up doing a lot of blues/rock lead work around that time (lots of Pearl Jam, Hendrix, and Who stuff!). Usually if someone wanted me to play bass for them, it was prog./funk/jazz and if they wanted me to play guitar it was classic rock/blues. Through this, I found you can translate what you learn on one instrument to the other so it really is helpful and rounds you out as a musician. One example is that I found some of my slide guitar note inflections would work well on fretless bass too to get cool tones, so I got another Jazz Bass, sans frets. That and if you listen to the Who can't help but want to copy Entwistle...

Now that I'm in college for guitar I still find myself playing a lot of bass in jams and in bands so I always keep my Jazz Bass and Carvin BRX 2x12 combo handy (killer amp BTW if you can find one). It was interesting playing bass in a straight up blues band for a change too since I was used to always having to play really busy walking lines, slap lines, or 16th note funk; it's kind of relaxing!

I've also branched out in the other direction on guitar too, doing some more jazz stuff since it's a more academic style in the theory sense compared to most rock and blues (i.e. you have to know what a Bbmaj7b5 or a Eb7#9/G is sometimes). Since I had done this stuff on bass before in a band setting, I already had an idea for what it should sound like too so it wasn't as much of a guessing game thanks to that dual-instrument perspective.

In all honesty though, my heart is definitely in rock, blues, and funk so that's what I advertise myself as stylistically. If I ever get a sweet paying gig backing a jazz band on guitar, then I'll happily whip out my Gretsch hollowbody and watch the money come in. But i'll still come home and blast on my Esquire! (I haven't gotten jazz gigs yet though, so the Esquire gets stage time too!)
