My brother....

wants to start playing guitar. I'm glad and proud that he decided to take this up. Right now he has a **** Ibanez guitar. It's terrible, goes out of tune every five minutes. Fretboard feels like sandpaper. Just terrible. He played my tele and was saying how much better it is. So I told him the guitar sucks, and when he gets a little better, and if he stays commited, I'd get him a new one. So we got to talking about it and I asked what kind of guitar he would want. He wants to play metal (he's 12) so I suggested a Jackson or a better Ibanez, etc. And he said, "I want a telecaster, like you got". I was touched. So I wanna get looking for one he might like. Squier maybe, but I want something that will play great and keep him motivated to play, but isn't too expensive. Maybe an MIM? Let me know your thoughts.

Some of fondest guitar memories is of being about 12 or 13 in the garage with my dad's tele cranking through a musicman bass amp trying to suss out sabbath and maiden licks A look at the squire page on fender.com only shows the obey series and the deryck whibley guitar as having a bridge HB which will make life easier for a budding headbanger. Don't laugh, but this would be a good metal tele (may need to sand the signature off tho') http://cgi.ebay.com/Fender-squire-Te...QQcmdZViewItem

I was thinking of getting a Squier and putting one of those stacked humbuckers in there. I don't think he'd go for one of those OBEY guitars.

Just because its a single coil rout doesn't mean you're only confined to a single coil. Find a suitable Tele and get him a SD Hot Rail.

I think he likes the traditional Tele look, though.

Volitan,
I found a Squier Affinity series Tele on eBay with a hot rail (bladed humbucker in a single coil profile) already in the bridge. It was $90 + $23 shipping. Guitar Center sells them new for $170 and you'd have to add a pickup. I like Guitar Fetish's pickups for value, and they have what you'd want for $30. The Lil Puncher XL Modern Lead 15K H103

Whatever you do, good luck. With a big brother like you, it's no wonder he wants to play a Tele.

*added: If he really likes the traditional look, the Butterscotch might be the way to go.
