New Guy.. few questions..
Hey guys..
I plan on purchasing a MIM Tele within the next week or two, and am curious what you guys have to say about what sort of amps are adequate to get the best sound.. Now, I must say, I do not gig as of right now, so i do not plan on spending a lot of money until the time is needed.. I currently have a crate half stack with a little Peavey amp i'm using as the head, and obviously it does not sound too great.. I have a chance to get a Carvin X-60A Tube Amp for $150 and have heard great things about these amps.. I was wondering if you guys thought that this amp would do my tele justice.. |

I don't want anything crazy, just the typical tele sound.. My current rig will not do my guitar justice as it's inadequate, and i just want something "decent" to give me a pure tele sound.. As i said, i don't gig as of right now, I normally just jam with friends and stuff of that nature.. So i guess i'm just curious if this amp will give me a loud enough sound where if i'm playing with others it will be powerful enough to hear it.. especially over drums.. I was reading some reviews on the amp, and all i see is how loud this thing goes.. Basically i am just curious if anyone has any experience with this amp, and what they'd rate it.

... a typical tele sound is going to be subject everyone's tastes and experience...
To me a typical tele sound would be off a Buck Owens record or an early 50's western swing album - clean, twangy - sharp attack... I can't give you any help with regards to that amp as I have never heard it or played it... |

I own a good American Tele but everytime I go to store, I always pick up a
MIM to play with, the MIM Tele sure has that typical Tele sound, my Tele at home is no doubt a better model in terms of neck quality but everytime I pick up a MIM, I feel the mojo rising immediately, the only thing prevents me to buy another MIM Tele is that it does not offer a rosedwood board. |

a friend of mine has a Carvin tube amp, and he's let me play my MIM Tele through it a couple of times. loved it. very good on "clean" sound....didn't try any effects or distortion through it... but for signature Telecaster sound, it did the job.

Unless you are wanting to spend a lot , most amps for household use are much of a much .
I stopped using amps in the house years ago and bought a podxt , which I use pretty much for everything except live use now , and I could even use it on stage if I needed . It's perfect for playing along to tracks too , and puts you right into the mix . Just plug it into a set of speakers when your friends come around . As you are not gigging , perhaps this is something to consider . |

You just need a small old tube amp.I have a 12watt Bogen DB110 hi/fi amp mid 50s vintage running through an 8" Jensen speaker,My MIM sounds fantastic through it.

Yep. based on what you described. It will sound just dandy. Use the clean channel for classic country and you should be right in the ballpark. Those are supposed to be pretty nice amps.

all the Carvins i've seen are pretty versatile. at $150 for something to work with, i'd give 'er a go. i'd bet it'll do your Tele justice, but at 60 watts, it's pretty beefy for plunking around the house ... but i don't think you'll hafta worry about it holding up in a jam. later, you can always swap/sell/trade it in for something else when your Tele direction becomes clearer.

Carvin tube amps are a good bang for the buck. With half of Peaveys amp line being built in China now you will find no better bargin than a Carvin. I worked with a guy that used a Bel Air 50 watt 2;12 for several years and it stayed very well cranked from the minute it was flipped on with zero problems. He still owns it, but is now using the Carvin MTS (100 watt, Grandaddy to the Vai amp).
I own a R1000 Carvin bass amp that I gigged for a few years when I was playing bass after an arm (radius) break. With the 4;10 Carvin cab it'll shake Russia. Zero issues. Their power amps rate better than Peavey, their cabs are still American, and I don't get all the Peavey love anymore. Carvin has remained an American product while Peavey has chosen to outsourse simply to sell a cheap product. Nothing wrong with that. But....... Best of luck. Murph. |
