Squier Tele Custom... I think I need it!
So I stumbled on one of these this evening and played it for a bit.
What a great guitar! Neck played great, great fret work and most importantly it was very light. I can't take heavy guitars anymore. Now I think I need it... Anyone have one of these???? Please talk me out of it. I need another guitar like a whole in the head even if it is a great price. |

Alright I'll talk you out of it.
Dude, what are you doing! Why do you want to buy that guitar that looks awesome, plays and sounds great, and costs next to nothing? Don't know what you could be thinking. |

It's funny you should mention this guitar .
I am not normally a guy who picks a Squire up , but I have played the exact same guitar twice in the past week . First time by chance , and second time by choice . I have not plugged it in yet ( I never do ) , but I have over an hour on it so far . I found the neck to be quite thick , and it felt very nice , and was set up very well . The strings also felt light , which may have enhanced the playability . I thought it was medium weight , and certainly not light , and I took a real liking to how it played . Controls were a bit stiff though so some pot changing required . It was sat beneath about 20 other Teles , including 62 RI's , FS's , Deluxes etc . There were 2 guitars that I actually thought were good . One was a Custom shop R&B Classic , with a strange tinsel type decal which wouldn't last 2 seconds , and the other was the above mentioned guitar . The R&B was about £1500 and the Squire was £199 . I could probably get it for £150 as the owner and myself go back a long time , but I already have far too many guitars as it is . Even without plugging it in , I am still very fond of it , so I won't hesitate to advise you to buy it , regardless of the pups being good or not |

The Custom (and Custom II) has my favorite neck of any Squier I've played. I've been *this* close to getting one a few times. Maybe for Christmas...
Get it!!!

Nice job but I don't think it is working! It is good to see people have had the same experience with this guitar as I have had. My initial thought was to replace the pups cause that is usually the weakest link in a budget guitar, but after I plugged it in and played it for an hour or so, they seemed very usable. They had alot of snap and a nice bell type tone for a humbucker. |

I'm with aunchaki. Of my 4 Squiers, the Custom and Custom II have my favourite necks. Nice little fatties.
May change the p'ups to some Retrotrons or wide range clones along with the electrics. Not essential though. Back to the task at hand...don't buy it. There, i tried!

Don't buy it.
After all, you said you need it like a hole in the head. You have plenty of guitars. Why go out and buy a guitar that is ridiculously cheap, light and very playable? You have the memories of playing a Squier Tele Custom and they say memories last a lifetime. Every time you lug one of your heavier guits it will all come flooding back. That decision you made...........

I only played one in a store, some time ago. I wasn't very impressed.
(that said, that store doesn't set up their guitars at all, and I used the cheapest Marshall solid state amp to try it out on. YMMV,VM (Your Mileage Might Vary, Very Much))

If you do buy it, search around the net as the price on those has been raised recently from $200 to $230. If you get it from MF, call in your order as it was featured in their most recent catalog, then give them the item number but then make sure to mention its in the catalog with source code (I can look it up for you if you don't have their catalog), and they should sell if to you at the price printed in the catalog. Thats how I got an Epi VJ head for $99 just after they raised their price to $130 last year....

My main Tele (my only Tele to be honest) is a Squeir Telecaster Custom. It's a great guitar! The neck is my favorite part. It has just the right thickness and feel. I changed the pickups in it and now it sounds great. The original humbuckers weren't too bad, but they weren't what I was looking for at all.

Thanks everyone for all your input. Here is an update. I decided to pass on this guitar. The guitar is in a store I teach at so I used it again yesterday for a couple of lessons and wasn't as stoked about it on day 2. That is one of the benefits of playing a guitar more than once I guess. I really did like the neck alot but just could not get comfortable with the layout of the controls and such. I kept accidentally hitting the pickup select switch and could not find the volume control half the time.
So I am very excited I actually passed on a guitar for a change. |

Awwww.... oh well.
But I know how you feel. There was a Squier Tele Custom and a Squier Tele Standard side by side and I tried both. Ended up taking home the Standard instead. Just like computer programming: simple = good. |

Before you buy a Squier Tele Custom, try a Squier Tele Custom II. I have a Squier Tele Custom and I'm converting it to a Squier Tele Custom II. The P-90 pickguard and pickups are easy enough to get through a Fender dealer, but those stinking brackets that hold the P-90s to the pickguard aren't. I got one P-90 used from a TDPRI member with the bracket but bought the other P-90 new through a Fender dealer. A new P-90 from the dealer doesn't come with the bracket, and the Fender dealer doesn't have a part number by which he can order the bracket. So it's way easier to convert a P-90 Custom II to a humbuckered Custom, than the other direction.
