Can the 60's Classic do "twang"?
I know this topic has been discussed to death, I just have a short specific question.
I've read all the posts about the 50's and 60's Classic Teles. I'm very close to pulling trigger on one or the other. From the research I've done, it sounds like the 60's is darker sounding than the 50's. But can the 60's Classic twang out at all? Would it be good for that type of thing? I play pretty much rootsy stuff...a lot of open chords and Open G stuff. Not so much lead. I just Thanks a lot, everyone! |

Sure it can twang. And I wouldn't say it's darker sounding than the 50's Tele, but maybe more transparent or airy. (It's hard to discribe sound with words).
It can do both Cropper, Don Rich, Roy Nichols and blues if YOU can |

I've got a '60s & it's a nice guitar. I wouldn't call it dark. I haven't owned a stock '50s Classic (though have played a few), but in comparing the '60s Classic to an AV'52RI that I had but sold, or my parts Tele w. Nocasters or my AV'62RI, I'd say it has maybe a hair more "grind" than the others, maybe not as "clean" a tone but nice in it's own way. It has plenty of treble, if that's what you want, just a bit different tone, maybe more mids? It tends to overdrive some stuff sooner than the other guitars, IME.
I'd put it this way: I can dial my AV'62RI tone knob & amp settings down to make it sound just about like the '60s Classic, but can't dial the '60s Classic tone & amp controls "up" or whatever to make it sound quite as "clean" as the AV. I hasten to add a few things: all the above are nice & versatile, tone is in the ears of the beholder, and a ton of the tone stuff comes from the amp, amp settings, pickup height, guitar tone & volume settings & and how you play 'em. |

I understand what you mean about tone being very subjective. I think either the 50's or the 60's would be great for me. It seems like each one does certain things really well, but they're both excellent guitars no matter what.
Maybe I'll even have both someday! |
