General fender question. What year did CBS first start foreign production of guitars?

That would be the first Squiers made in Japan in 1982

1982 was when the first Japanese Fenders showed up.

Tokai made some excellent Fender copies before that.

From what I've read it was an ' if you can't beat 'em, join 'em' sort of decision.

I don't believe CBS ever did - it was the new owners of Fender post-CBS. And 1982 it was, I believe, while they were creating the new factory.
