NJ Gig Alert- 1/26 w/Bill Frisell - Teles Galore!

Hey everyone!

This Saturday night I'll be playing with Jamaaladeen Tacuma's band (w. the great Calvin Weston on drums) opening up for Bill Frisell's trio!

Still trying to decide whether to use my tele or les paul on this one- NOT!!!
Of course I'm going to use my tele.

The show is at Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts, January 26th, 2007. Email: tickets@rutgerscamdenarts.org Phone: (856) 225-2700
The show starts at 8:00 PM.

The address is:
Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts
3rd and Pearl Streets
Camden Waterfront
Camden, NJ USA 08102

Hope to see all you New Jerseyers there!

Boy, that sounds like a great gig...I just love Jamaladeen Tacuma's work w Ornette Coleman. And Frisell, wowee zowee....love about everything he's done, from Motian through Zorn and way beyond. One of my favourite musicians. Have you met him before? He seems like such a humble, thoughtful person. Is he still playing his MIM tele?

You better play that gorgeous custom-made tele of yours! What effects/amp will you be playing through?

Man, I haven't seen a jazz show in ages. I gotta get out more. If I were in Jersey, I'd hit that fo sure.

Bill is really humble, and very approachable. The first time I saw him was in Martha's Vineyard of all places. It was the summer after I graduated college, and I had a job there driving buses. It was boring as hell!!! I had so much free time waiting to do my bus route, that I transcribed an entire Charlie Parker solo by ear!!!!!! no guitar or music paper to write it down! Believe me, it took hours and days!!!! God that job was torture!!!!

Anyhow, Bill played a solo gig in a small church, just an acoustic guitar. It was amazing, because he's not a chops player, but he has the best technique I've ever seen.

Have you ever watched Bill Evans' hands as he played piano? They just float over the keys- no hesitation, utterly graceful.

Watching Frisell was the same way.

But here's the kicker, at the same show, he did a set of duets with Brad Melhdau (one of my favorite pianists). It was the first time they played together and was quite a treat.

After the show, I went a talked to Bill, he was rather quiet. Then again, it was also somewhat awkward, because I shoved a CD of my senior recital in his face. I'm going to ask him if he remembers it on Saturday!!! HA!!!

For this gig I'll just be going through my pedalboard and laptop into my SFDR.

Nothing too crazy! (;

Playing with Jamaaladeen and Calvin Weston is a thing in itself.

Jamaal told me a story once about playing with Ornette that went something like this:
"You know how some bands will start slowly and then build up to a peak. With Ornette we started at the peak and just pushed on from there."

That just about sums up playing with that rhythm section- tour de force.

Let's hope I don't get run over!!
