This Flacke instrumental may be the best!

As some of you know, Ray has always been my biggest influence and I never heard this one before last week! I found out that this one was on his later "Untitled Island" CD, but when I bought that first run CD back in the 90's it wasn't on there, so I have never heard it. Since then I found out it was on some Nashville Pickers CD and then later added to the Untitled Island CD's on the second run. It's new for my ears and geat!

The song is so bad ass'd and I feel bad for not knowing about it until now! It made the hair stand up on my arms! It's a "shivergitter" (thanks Waylon)! I think that he's playing his old '68 Franken-Tele (which is now my new-old '68 Fanken-Tele) and I do know he's playing through his old 50's Gibson tube amp. He told me this had some Richie Blackmore influence.

I have been a Flacke fan for years...I still have one of his old vids on VHS around here..his solo on "Heartbroke" is dang near the top of the pile for me.

Wow, great stuff! Way back around 35 years ago Ray used to come and sit in with the band I was with at the White Hart pub in Southall, West London, on Sunday lunchtimes and was pretty mind-boggling even then. When I first made it to Nashville in '98 I looked him up and caught his Wednesday night gig with Jamie Bradley at Wolfie's on Broadway. He remembered our sax player better than me but I didn't take it personally! We had a good long chat and a drink after the set, but after that it was four years until I got to visit town again and the phone number I had for him was no longer good as he'd moved in the meantime.

That link to his MySpace page not only allowed me to give my ears a treat or four, but also enabled me to get in touch by message again. Don't know if a busy pro guy like Ray will have time or inclination to reply to a mere passing acquaintance like me, but many thanks for the opportunity afforded by your post.

Ray is one of my all time favorite players too. I had the chance to jam with him at the Nashville Palace back in 1986. Nice guy to boot.

How did you talk Ray out of the 68 Tele............you lucky S.O.B.

Yup, Ray's a pretty easy going guy! He takes time out to chat with me now & then and I'd guess about anyone else, that's how I found this song. He recommended it after I was discussing a technique with him.

He read this post and cleared things up.

Ray said: "With Templar I was playing homage to both Blackmore (bridge/chorus) and Roy Nichols verse.. and both as I saw it for the solo section! Who knows...It's was just how I saw it at the time."

Interesting!

He gave it to me because I’m such a phenomenal player! He said”Scott, you outplay me all the time so you might as well just have my guitar!”

NOT!

Well in that case, remind me not to ever jam with you!
