Taipan / Pinemart - Taipan Model

I was listening to Leslie West - Mississippi Queen" on the radio thinking about one of the first concerts that I saw back in the day was Mountain. It got me thinking of how Leslie just man handled that LP Jr. Next thing I though about was combining the best qualities of the LP Jr. and a Tele and I called Marty on the phone telling him "Hey I got this Idea. I'm sure it has been done before but I would like to combine a LP Jr. and a Tele. He said " I haven't done one before" But I think it would be cool". Here is the result -

Here are some more pictures - Gonna be sporting one of my half bridges, control plate and neck plate. LP Jr pickguard ( Which I cut out of paper since I did not have one handy) Nice ebony Fat Back neck and maybe some other cool things. Have not settled on the color. Maybe TV Yellow or Tobacco Burst. Could always go with Black or the pickup as yet.
As I get things done I post more pictures.

Vince, so I thought for a second there was a rear rout for the control cavity???

Looks like you are going to do a top rout I am glad that is much cooler.

Looks great dude.

I am loving this. I bought a flawed pine body that I am trying to remedy, just don't have the time.

That is what I would call perfect.

Looking forward to seeing that! LPJrs are my other favorite guitars.

I've got a set of prints for a double-cut '59 waiting here for me.

What are you using for a neck?

Probably the best compliment that you can get is when the guy who builds it doesn't want to part with it. I sure glad it didn't get to a wrestling match with you Marty....
Featherweight.... I forgot to mention it weights in at a mere 3.74 lbs !!! and that is without the control plate rout and edge routing which should bring it in under 3 1/2 lbs

Tedecaster - Currently I am planning on using a Musikrafter's Tele Baseball bat 1" thick 2 piece Rosewood or Ebony slab. ( still bouncing back and forth between 24-3/4" or 25-1/2" scale ) I wanted to pull the Head stock, neck, bridge, pick up and control plate elements from the Tele and the body profile and pick guard from the LP Jr. In so doing I am thinking it will cause whomever is looking at it to be in total confusion as they will be seeing Tele and LP Jr and then after it registers go " now that cool "....

That is without a doubt the coolest idea I've seen in a long time!!!!!!!!

guitarbuilder- I think the snakehead idea is great. Maybe on a '59 double cut style chunk of pine?

My thoughts exactly. It would be a Prototype Prototype Junior.

Why not make a all in one Pickguard to control plate out of your brushed stainless?

Now that would look absolutely killer on a black guitar or a darker burst.

It takes such guts to embark on a totally different design scheme like that.

And so I do feel like a trespasser, driving my truck around in somebody else's pasture when I propose this, but I'm having difficulty with the long control plate element fitting into the rest of the Gibson form.

Is it too late, or have you thought about an upside down Squier 51 or 51 P-bass type control plate? As she's a one-pupper, would fewer controls seem right?

Again, my apologies for the ham fisted suggestion. Very exciting design.

...Shame onna mess!!

I knew that was coming. Fuzzy, I am probably the biggest violator of the Tele shape rule. My best tele don't even look like a tele. I got a whole closet full of FrankenTeles.

But I love that tele sound too much. My wife is always telling me they sound too shrill or "unsmooth." Now I disagree with her politely there. And I am gonna have to disagree with you here. I think odd shaped teles are a tribute to how versatile the Tele platform is.

Please understand that, we are just odd ball brethren. If you knew more about me, you'd understand why the looks can be different and the sound mean more.

I love Tele's and the bastard children of them, too! And for your leadership and Teleosity, I love you, too.

Bubbanov -Please don't ever feel like a trespasser driving around my pastures. Your input as well as all others are always welcome. It's all good. That 304 SS .100 thick control plate was one that I had laying around for another build so I placed it on there for a little taste. Your right, since it will be sporting only one pup I will only need minimum one knob maybe two if I decide to throw a tone pot in. I will custom make one shorting it up as needed. I am also planning on pulling the bottom edge of the pickguard down some until I get the volume knob in the right position and then radius out the pickguard for the upper part of the control plate as is on a tele pick guard thus hopefully combining the ascetics of the two.

Your suspicion is confirmed, Fano Guitars beat ya to it. It's an awesome idea though, I'm suprised this didn't become a reality years ago.
