I played a 52 avri in the copper color in 97 or 98 that seemed to me had more of a "U" neck than my 07 52 avri in Butterscotch....Did the early model 52 ri of the 80's and 90's have more of a "U" neck?...Or did this already get discussed and I missed it?.....lol.....

The copper one you played could have been one of the first batch with a U-neck though. Had to be a '98 I'm sure ... |

Having owned MIJ Reissues, CIJ Reissues, MIM Reissues, MIA Reissues and a US Custom Shop '56 Relic Strat, I still think the bone stock AV52 Tele is a great guitar. And I never get tired of looking at 'em, or playing 'em!
Thanks,

As some may note, Fender, like some other makers, have really stepped up their quality over the last number of years. But you would be hard pressed to do bad with most '52RI's based on the ones I've owned and played over the years. Just note what the others have said about the neck sizes if that is a focal point for you.
Here's my latest '52 RI, a 2008 that made me feel like I struck gold when I located it....

I've been thinking about changing my Fender American Vintage '52 to the New School set up, but the only thing that stops me is my 1999 Telecaster '52 AVRI Copper Metallic, it's set up for Bridge / Bridge & Neck / Neck. I'm thinking I have the best of both world's?
What do you folks think? Jeff American Vintage '52: ![]() 1999 Telecaster '52 AVRI Copper Metallic:

Mine is a 1997 and I got it for $875 five years ago. If it was truly that rare I don't think the price would have been so reasonable. ![]() This pic was taken two years ago, after I changed the smaller orange tinted neck with an AllParts TMNF Fat neck. Six months ago I turned it into an Esquire - can't leave well enough alone |

Yes only 100 coppers were ever made because they did not sell. You could not give them away, so Fender stopped making the Copper Caster.
I think Fender started making the Copper Caster again in 2006 out of the Custom Shop price is about $3000.00. 1999 52 RI

rul8agn, that's the straightest-grained '52 Tele I've ever seen! Very interesting and very unique. Almost looks like a pine grain.
I keep seeing folks talk about a U neck on post-1999 '52s, but mine (Oct 2001) is a soft V. Perfectly sized IMHO. Not too big, not too small, and fits very well in my hand. A JV Strat is a bit fatter than my neck btw, and I love those necks as well. Mine's about 7.25 lbs, and acoustically resonant as heck. #44080

I am of the opinion that the guitars up to the early 90's are all very similar, action, body the whole deal. I have an 88 , a friend just came across an 85 , another friend has one from 90 and yes..another friend. has one from 85 or 86. If you closed your eyes and they all had the same gauge new strings they would feel really really close to each other, all have 7.5 radius roundish necks. When you open your eyes you can pick mine out right away, it has the least attractive piece of wood ( body ) and the most wear. But in all fairness it had some dings when I bought it so I did not need to ding protect it for it's life, it is a work horse for me. .
Now, I have found for me, the newer guitars feel different, too much nitro, the action feels different, so for me early 90's or older would be what I would chase.
