Mmm...Color Tinting Grain Filler .... interesting
Didn't see this method of finishing (one step + clear if desired) -- check the link...you can put nitro, poly, whatever over the top of this, a good variety of colors. You can monkey with the opacity depending upon how much of the color you put in with the oil based grain filler,,,

I have done a bit of experimenting tinting grain filler.I have not tried it with oil based but I did try it with Target coatings water based filler.
I tried it on a body I was going to paint so you would not see it anyway This is what ash looks like with one coat tinted black,sanded back and then a clear coat and sanded back
