At a crossroad now what?
So I have a choice to make very soon.
I have to choose between two really nice guitars. Guitar #1 A 52 AVRI that feels oh so good. Guitar #2 Gibson Advanced Jumbo Acoustic. I have played these two instruments daily for the last week.. I am torn and I can't afford both. I have to make a choice by Thursday. Some observations of both. The Tele is top shelf, makes me wanna pick it up and play the solo to "Thats the way love goes" and "Ramblin Fever". To say it's inspiring is an understatement. The Gibson is the kind of acoustic that demands attention, it's loud.. it's gentle.. it's the perfect acoustic. Now about me.. people tell me I sing well..I don't think so (not a negative or self esteem issue) I often tell friends that I'd rather sing through a guitar.. with proper experience, one can do that. I am truly torn here.. help a brother out.

You ARE at the TDPRI right? I think the majority will send you towards the Tele, if I'm not mistaken. The thing you need to ask yourself is, what guitar will be more useful to me, and spend the most time in my hands?
P.S. BUY THE TELE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you write your own songs? Do you play outside the house?
Do you have an amp that can cut the tele? Are you going to have to buy some pedals? Most importantly, are you married, and if you are, what does your wife think? If you write your own material and play out BY YOURSELF OR WITH ONE OTHER buy the gibson. If you don't have an amp or some effects this is something that you will have to consider in the future as further expense. If this would look like a future problem or the wife feels that way-buy the gibson. Also, your wife's opinions are very important as she, and if you have children, they, will probably have to listen to you the most. If you got the amp and you are a working player pick up the tele. It will always generalize to almost every genre of music and will prove almost indestructible. You can write on it as well and if you-and there is really no way of knowing-if you are at the point where you want to play in a band or learn lead etc. it will be much more utilitarian.

Personally, I find a good acoustic is a hard thing to find. I have one, but it isn't as usable as I thought it would be and I struggle with it. There are thousands of Tele's out there and you can get one anytime. If the Gibson is as good as you say it is, grab it while it's going.

without question, if it sings to you, i'd get the advanced jumbo...
maybe it's a kneejerk reaction because i'm a lefty, but for me, finding the "perfect" acoustic is not to be taken lightly...(you righties have it sooo easy!!!) you may experience pangs of regret about the tele for a while, but you may well regret not getting the AJ for the rest of your life...(is that dramatic enough for you?)

Telecaster... if this was a Gibson acoustic forum I would vote for the acoustic.
That aside, well, I suppose it depends where you want to go musically. Putting the instruments aside, what do you feel passionate to do? Play an acoustic or pick a tele? Personally, I only seem to like playing beater acoustic guitars. The idea of spend more than a little bit of money on one just doesn't work for me. But, it is about what I feel drawn to do as a guitar player. I don't know if this is useful at all. Just a couple of thoughts. Cheers, and have fun making your decision! Bob

As much as we may want to believe that there's a "magic" Telecaster out there, they're basically assembly-line units. Not all are created equal, of course, but you'll be able to find a comparable 52AVRI for years to come. You may need LOTS of Teles (I do), but you only need one acoustic, and it should be the best one you can find. I believe there are "magic" acoustics. Mine is a Takamine 12-string. It's amazing.

The Gibson AJ Acoustic!
I saw your pics in the Gallery section. I don't understand why you don't have an acoustic guitar?
I mean in case your electricity goes out, and you feel like playing the guitar, are you gonna' pick up your Strat or Tele? |

Several times I've passed on the Gibson and immediately regretted it, gone back to the store only to find it gone. I finally found this 1974 J-45 for $1500 and bought it after playing for a few minutes. Nicest guitar I've ever had, next to my 1974 Gibson B-45-12 Deluxe (which I still have).
![]() My Wife was a bit miffed with me for buying a guitar on "impulse". Now if I even suggest selling that J-45 I'm told on no uncertain terms that I'm going before that guitar goes! LOL Buy the Gibson you won't regret it. Then buy the Tele. |

A little more info.
Hey guys thanks for the input...
I tend to agree that I can find a great playing Tele, easier than I can find one of these The woman involved is my fiancee, this was her idea. She is paying for which one I choose. I lean toward the acoustic for some of the same reasons. This Advanced Jumbo is a replica (sort of) of the 300 made in 1936 MOP inlayed headstock and fingerboard. I think my fiancee, friends, and family will get more enjoyment out of the Gibson.. seeing them enjoy it, makes me enjoy it. I already have electrics that I can play. Thanks for helping me out here brothers.

I have the same admiration for Teles and Fender as you do, but, this time, I have to go with that Gibson box. How am I gonna make good backing tracks for my Tele leadwork without it?
