Jack, this is outstanding. I always marvel at you level of craftsmanship.
When I look at this guitar, there are only two things that bother me...they are the little bumps that you had to put on the rim to hold the screws. ![]() I'm wondering if it would be possible to avoid them. The following come to mind. This is way complicated, and I don't even know if I can describe it...I know I certainly would have a hard time pulling it off. Rather than fastening the top & back with those little wood screws, how about holding them in place with cap head machine screws on the top, and have the hex nuts inlayed into the back. Lots of fine machining for sure. It would be a real pain! But then the the body wood would not be holding the top and back on. The body would only be acting as a thick washer. No need to worry about stripping threads, and (probably) no need to have those little lumps on the inside. Once again, thanks for sharing and congratulations on a job well done!

The idea was to have all acrylic mounting screws the same distance from the outside edge. Without the bumps the screws would have been too close to the inside edge. Once the template was modified it was simple to do the body core and any future versions will have them. I'm thinking of getting some more maple and doing one full thickness without the covers.

I was absent for a little while and I almost missed this thread!
This gets my award for the most outrageous guitar ever build...and yet it doesn't look tacky at all. In fact it looks like a million bucks! Great job, Jack!

i'm very disappointed to have seen gibson's guitar of the month for january 2009 look like they ripped of this guitar, and in the process couldn't even manage to make it look as good as yours!

Jack:
Just stunning. I find new stuff of interest every time I visit this place. B-bender version next? How about an "aquarium"? Just need a little silicone and a screw on cap. Or a HabitTrail filled with hamsters. You'd need a hollow neck. Awe-inspiring. I've always found the Fender Custom models where some artist paints one-of-a-kind Disney, or Harley imagery as kinda tacky. But yours is a pure evolution of Leo's original concept. And very elegant to boot! |
