Thrill Of A Lifetime, Part 2. (NTC)
For the second time in as many years I was asked to sit in with my friend Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets. The event was a public dinner/party/concert in a small town in Iowa (Ottumwa). It's a humbling experience to be on the same stage as such monster talents as Anson, the Rockets, and Sam Myers. But what a rush?!!! For some of you this would be "old hat" but for this small town jazz/blues player it was the highest point in my 44 year musical career. I was trying out a new (and unfamiliar) guitar and amp so I was not at my best, but no matter. It was still an incredible rush. We played almost a whole set starting with "Looking The World Over" and ending 7or 8 songs later with a smoking version of "Hold It". Adding to the thrill was seeing my mentor and "adopted" father (72 year old) Don Blew, a monster jazz guitar player in his own right, sit in with Anson, Sam, the Rockets, and myself. Don's not always complimentary of some blues players but he gushed about Anson's "make every note count" style. The old jazz player had the time of his life and seeing that happen gave me a high that drugs would never be able to provide. And, as always, Anson, Sam, John, Wes, Eric, and Joe (Anson's father-in-law and bus driver) were the nicest and humblest of people. The crowd was awesome and extremely appreciative. I am so deeply honored. What a night...what a night?!! 8)

what fun
hey, man, what a great night. wish I could have been there. it's funny, you never sound as good as you want to -- but you always sound better than you thought you did. put that pick someplace where you can find it later, sounds like a night to remember.

Very, very cool Tom!
Years ago, I found an Anson CD in the cutout bin of a used record store. I had no idea who he was, but it looked like a cool CD with Sam Myers & all. Well, it floored me! His economical style and killer tone were very refreshing and a real eye opener.
I'm happy for you that you had the chance to sit in with them. What a thrill! Sorry you did not have the gear you're accustomed to. I know how it is when your sitting in with unfamiliar gear! Thanks for sharing. Very cool!

That sounds like it was awesome
Glad you enjoyed it. Not many people get the high you are talking about, when you get it, that feeling is there every time you think about it.
