Hey, that Bozo was so proud of his relic job, he signed his name with an X, right on the top where everyone can see the craftsmanship, the attention to detail and the beauty of a "natural relic"! Yeah Peds, another amazing example of someone who "really knows what old guitars look like"! I'm gettin embarassed to tell folks how much I love relics, because if they see that kind of hack job, they're gonna think I'm nuts. Well, that last part IS true I spose! jvc

I have to admit I'm mildly tempted to put a bid on it. I like the idea of having an inexpensive banged up tele. If I drop it or my nephews knock it over or a friend of mine decides to use it as a snowboard I won't be too freaked out.

I don't get it
I don't get relicing at all. You guys are making fun of the job here but I'm laughing at anyone that does this at all. Sure that guitar looks pitiful but then again so does every relic I've ever seen. IMHO, in the world of guitars there aren't too many things cheesier than a fake relic.

Agreed, hippietim. Relics, to me, have always seemed really stupid. Why would you want your guitar pre-beat? I usually like keeping my guitars as nice as I can, until they are beat to a point where I just don't care anymore. I'd just buy a true vintage guitar if I wanted it to look like a vintage guitar. '64 mustangs, mmm.

I have a 56' jr. and a 56' Martin 0021 that are beat to hell and were that way when I got them (the only way I could afford them). The kind of beat that feels good in your hands. I wish I could collect every cool guitar from 56 that there was, but I ain't got that kinda cake. I would like all my guitars to feel that comfortable and worn in. It's not gonna happen with the finish on my 52' re issue til I'm an old man. I try to treat my guitars well. I would feel funny about abusing a guitar on purpose, but in a way it is like breaking in a baseball glove with oil and pounding on it and putting it under your mattress and all those tricks to get it comfy and loose. The level Pedalworld takes it to is real craft imho.

The point is, some of the beauty of an old guitar is the way it feels and plays. A well done relic can capture that feel and look without you having to shell out big bucks and then risk taking it out in the big cruel world.

Ten or twenty grand is ridiculous for any guitar, unless it was Jimi's white or black strat, or the '69 competition mustang Cobain used in the Smells Like Teen Spirit video. You can get superb vintage guitars such as mustangs, jaguars, jazzmasters and hagstroms for less then a grand if you take the time to look. There are so many models of teles and strats that no matter who you are, you will find one that is perfect for you, with out ruining it. Thinking that you have to beat a perfectly good guitar to death to make it nice is a state of mind. If a new finish isn't your cup of tea, try a neck with a very thin finish, or no finish at all.. Just beware of it warping.

It's all relative. 10 or 20 grand for a guitar is not ridiculous if you make $150,000 a year, or if you won the lotto or are jes plain rich. Of course, I would imagine most of us here are workin stiffs and probably average less than 50K per year (please no flames, jes guessing the average). To a person who makes 10K a year, $1500 is probably an outrageous amount for a guitar. To someone who makes 150K a year, that's not a huge amount. I'm being general here, all situations are different, but sometimes I think some people are jes plain jealous of folks who drop big bucks for guitars. The impression I get from some here (not all) is "Even if I had a million bucks, I wouldn't spend 15K for a guitar". I think if you actually had the million bucks, you might change yer mind. My take on the relics is "I get em". If you don't, that's fine, but I dig em. If it comes down to a relic that has been done realistically and a shiny, new guitar (both at the same price, same sound and playablity) I'll grab the relic every time. Jes my pinion. jvc

It's just wrong!
The wear that occurs on a guitar should happen as a result of play and age... makes me mad to see someone butcher a perfectly good guitar like that. Of course, he wants to sell it. It's a piece of junk now!

You got it, KPB...
...the way to relic a guitar is to play it for 20 years...

So, given that 8,100 hour equals 337 days (a little less than a year), if you simply took your guitar with you EVERYWHERE you went for a year (including sleeping, showering, parties, work, school, vacation, etc), without a case - leaving it in the car on occasion for a few hours when it's really cold or really hot... that should give it the relic'd appearance. On top of that, if you were to make a glove out of 2000 grit sand paper and play the guitar like that, the wear spots would form within a matter of months to the point it looked 20-30 years old. Now *that's* a genuine relic job, in only 1 year!
