Sco plays a Tele

This seems to be taken in a guitar store, but i read an anecdote elsewhere that Scofield has rediscovered the joy of playing a Tele.
He used to own one a long time ago which he sold and apparently it resurfaced back when the current owner wanted to sell it back to him for 14,000$ plus an Ibanez JSM. Sco just said forget it and went out and bought a new one

i couldn't agree more Rob....

jes' goes to show ya that the Tele forces us to become better players, as minor mistakes and inconsistencies immediately become glaringly obvious......
Sco's a monster player, but will clearly have to adapt his touch and technique to the Tele....

Sco played a Tele at the Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood gig here in Boston last year. I think I read somewhere that it is a Fender Custom Shop guitar. I'm a fan of a lot of Scofield's music, but his sound on the Tele was like an ice pick to the ear.

Wow. Was he drunk or something? I've heard him rip a guitar countless times, but that was pretty rough. Kinda makes me feel good about myself, actually. Also, the tone wasn't exactly great either. Easy on the reverb knob there, fella.

I can't answer for the rest of the guys, but I'm familiar with his playing. That's probably why I'm so shocked about this clip. If I didn't see it myself, I wouldn't have believed it.....

If you like it, it's your own business, I guess .

I loved it - I love JS - great, wonderful player - many of his recordings in ongoing rotation here.

When I first heard and got into Sco was with his Blue Matter ('86/'87)record - great, mid-80's Fusion-y Funk-y Jazz - the sound of the recording was so warm and good, but these days, I like his more straight ahead playing over that of the MM&Wood and other like offerings (though I do have and dig A Go Go).

At that time ('86) I was 24 yrs old & gigging 5 nights a week playing (what's now referred to as) Classic Country, but I was listening/learning/digging Sco, Stern, Metheny and Carlton - most certainly those 4 cats had some deep impact on me as a player - as did the club stuff I was doing for a living.

Sco... beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Edit to say: I didn't hear anything wrong with it - no 'ouch' from me - sounded just like John Scofield.

What I see in the vid is Sco, trying to play a guitar that someone brought to him and doing his thing! I recognize his playing there. Not something worked out but improvised on the fly!
But ok, that's maybe just me

One of those painful, yet hilarious "shreds" videos? Clapton, Vai, Santana, and now Sco "shreds".

I'd just say pretty uninspired. The comping he lays down sounds like he was thinking about what he was going to have for dinner later. The soloing sounded to me like he just wasn't really into it. Well I guess we all have days like that.

I could understand it...giving a quick and simple demo at a guitar store. Not hard to believe he didn't put heart and soul into it. Really a pretty low key situation, not what I'd call a performance venue. And you're right, we do all have days like that.

It's funny, we're quick to attack the famous, but if someone had posted a video like this in Twanger Central with say, much worse tone and 100 more clunkers, people would be complimenting it.

sounds like sco to me. not a better moment, for sure, but it's sco.

i'm not really a fan, but i've heard plenty of his playing that's good enough to keep me from critiquing his stuff...there's no doubt he's talented, just not my bag.

I didn't mean to come off like I was attacking him. I agree that the situation he was in probably didn't get his creative juices flowing. No big deal.

It's probably one of those situations where he made the commitment months in advance and it's a nice sunny Saturday afternoon and he'd rather be doing something else. I'm sure like anyone else he has days where he just doesn't feel like picking up a guitar. That's the way his playing sounds to me in that clip. Maybe he 'perked up' later on in the day.

I guess when someone has the level of reputation and experience like Scolfield we expect guitar magic every single second of the day and that's obviously an unreasonable expectation.

And for the record I'm not a fan of his playing style even on his good days.
