It seemed more like a Stratfest to me. I will say that between Vince Gill and Los Lobos, both ends of the Tele spectrum were fairly represented!
With David Hidalgo's tone, who needs a Les Paul?!

I caught part of it last week on PBS. I saw the Johnny Winter song and another song with some real good tele. I bought the DVD which is four hours long, and I plan on watching it all tomorrow. Oh, and I did catch Bill Murray playing Gloria which reminded me of myself playing it when I was 12

I think I saw a little of that last week. I do remember Jeff Beck and Los Lobos. Steve Winwood came out later and tore up a strat on one song before being joined by Clapton. I've always seen Winwood behind a keyboard, I was pleasantly surprised to see what I thought were quite impressive guitar chops. I know those guys are getting up there in age, but I was equally impressed with Winwood's voice. PBS has been on a tear lately. I caught a Stevie Ray Vaughan concert I hadn't seen before, a week later it was Gilmore (though the sound was out of wack most of the show) and then Crossroads, good stuff.

I was at the festival all day this summer and it was definitely an awesome event. Strats were probably the most bountiful of all guitars used as I recall, but there was a pretty decent variety. Oh, and Buddy Guy didn't use a Tele this time, but I have seen him before and he had a dual humbucker Deluxe Tele for a good chunk of the set.

Buddy Guy to his boy after his son "found out" who he "really" was and what he played like: "I don't know why you're so surprised. I gets down."
Too cool.

Winwood's tele
I got the DVD on Netflix yesterday, and at one point in Steve Winwood's set he plays a Fender Telecaster-shaped guitar with a flame maple top, an f-hole, rosewood fingerboard, and NO VISIBLE PICKUPS. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what that might be? It had a Fender decal on the headstock. I guess it was a version of the HMT.

Man, a lot of those guys are great, but I was REALLY impressed with John Mayer. That dude's style is insane. I love his blues playing.
Anyone who still things he's just a pop singer is STRONGLY mislead. |
