Squier JV Telecasters

Hi Fellow Tele Enthusiasts,

Does anyone know what the going rate is these days for a 1983 JV Tele (SQUIER by Fender logo) in V.G./Ex. condition? Also, do these guitars have a Lacquer or Polyester finish?

There used to be a great web-site with all kinds of detailed info on the JV & SQ Teles & Strats: www.squierjv.info - but it doesn't seem to be operating anymore. Does anyone know if it has moved somewhere (or what happened to it)?

Thanks very much for your time and help.

Don

It's the old adage... what's it worth to you??? Don't know about the finishes but i just saw a recent Ebait of an '82 Fender JV Strat (with the little Squier logo) going for ridiculous money $2000 or something.

The JV pages are now here. Great site

$1800. for a Squier?! . . . I don't think so.

Thanks, Tele-Meister.

I recently bought a JV series Fender 72 Deluxe RI. It cost A$1400 on eBay. I paid that much because:

a) I seriously wanted an early MIJ 72 Deluxe RI to replace my 2004 MIM version.

b) I'd never seen a JV Deluxe before and reasoned that they must be a bit rare...

It's serial number is JV5xxxx.

It's on the neck plate of course, where it's supposed to be.

I'm just shocked because I have NEVER EVER heard of an '83 JV Tele Deluxe. I have never seen a picture of one in any of the JV period brochures. If that was in fact a one off destined for Japanese home market (by virtue of the "Fender" decal) then you have indeed stolen that guitar.

Yes, I had never seen one either. I suppose it could be a partscaster, but if so, where have the donor parts come from? I certainly haven't had the neck off yet to check out the dates etc...but maybe I should just for interest sake.

One thing though, it most definitely IS an old guitar, from the obvious natural aging, along with it's wear and tear, bumps and bruises.

As a matter of interest, I also have a MIM Deluxe RI and it's NOTHING like one of those, hence my feeling that it may be the real deal. The only other possibility is that it's a genuine USA 70s Deluxe....

When I take the neck off, I'll let you know what I find.

OK, my curiousity got the better of me, so off I went into the workshop and pulled off the neck. Here's what I found...

Based on the fact that the neck date is correct for the expected date of the guitar and also based on the "Fender Japan" Tuners, I'd say the neck was definitely made in 1983 and is of course a Tele Deluxe or possibly Strat Neck. The body is less conclusive, other than the fact that it looked like the neck had never been off and that the hardware is consistent with Japanese items of the period.

So, I'm guessing that this beast may indeed be the real deal.

Oh my gosh. I dunno what to think other than it was definitely made for the Japanese home market...If that's the case I'd insure that bad boy.

I checked out my neck as well and the finishes are similar as it too is a JV5xxxx.

The JV Squiers are indeed great guitars. I've never ascertained whether they are nitro or poly though, can anyone elaborate.

The ones posted here are gems btw and congrats on that Holy Grail Deluxe!

Hey thanks guys!

This just goes to prove that trawling through eBay sometimes comes up trumps...

This is complete hearsay but under the neck there will be a red stamp of either a letter A,B,C, or D. A and B are nitro and C and D are poly finishes - allegedly.

I'm currently re-discovering my Squire. Its a great playing guitar, I've swapped the original bridge for the heavier 6 saddle brass one I kept from the MIJ I just sold. I'm debating putting better pups in it though.

those saddles look like the one on my early `80s Fernandes/The Function. Don`t own any Squires but I have some JVs and not found those saddles on any I own or have seen.

If that were mine, I'd pop off that pickguard and take a look at the underside of those pickups. It'd be really interesting to see what they are. You might have to unscrew one of the pole pieces to see whether it's strongly magnetic, to really find out.

Sorry to rain on the parade but Fuji-gen Gakki, where these guitars were made, had been making lookalike Wide-Range humbuckers for some time by 1982. They were doing them for Greco Spacey Sound Tele knockoffs. They used a flat ceramic magnet and non-magnetic polepieces like normal humbuckers, not the threaded CuNiFe in WRHBs.

When they started making Fender Japan they simply added Fender engraving to the covers, since there were no real WRHBs in production and they wanted to supply 70s style models to the domestic market.

Here's a linked Spacey Sound image compared to my Squier SQ Tele Custom - they are nearly identical apart from the 3-saddle Fender bridge on the Squier:

By the way - these early Japan reissues look much more like the originals underneath:

but they're not the same.

Yes, I'm familiar with those pickups. The one I had said "Maxon" on it but the Fender ones would obviously have said Fender.

Just thought it was worth checking on, since this seems to be such an odd example...

the early /mid `70s Grecos I have/had came with Maxon p`ups. Sometimes Grecos from that same time period had single coils disguised as `buckers.

yeah those are great books I have all 8 volumes for electrics and 2 of the 3 dedicated to acoustics. But even the guys who wrote those think they may be missing data and they include an e-mail address for readers to contact them.
