We were actually in Wisconsin tonight.

Prairie du Chien to be precise.

Lakeview Marina to be even more precise.

Thank you.

But halfway through the FIRST song tonight...I discovered what I had forgotten to put on it.

DOTS ON THE SIDE OF THE NECK!

What a chowderhead maneuver!

Fortunately, I was able to find a SILVER SHARPIE and put some dots on the binding.

They wore off by the middle of each set.

Had to "replace" them frequently.

And now you know.

OOps! Still, it's a perfect time to try the Gatton trick, installing 2.5mm cubic zirconium (artificial diamond) gems in their place...

Pretty much fine.

The sound guy's eyes really lit up.

Scott, the other guitar play liked it.

The drummer asked if I had a new pedal.

The other two guys didn't mention it.

Myself, it just seemed like another guitar.

Except it didn't have dots on the binding!

So you weren't seeing dots before your eyes then...

I know what you mean about another guitar. I finished up a quickie yesterday, the highlight being the EMG-T set.

Just got out of the shop a few minutes ago rounding, routing, sanding the Walnut/Cedar and pine bodies I have been sitting on. About time I got back on them. ;)

So, regular readers will recall that I took a guitar along to a dance job the other night, and quickly discovered that I had not replaced the side dots after I bound the neck.

Over the years I have accumulated lots of stuff.

This photo, by the way, does not begin to do the pile of crapola in that room justice.

Anyway, believe it or not, and since it is the Internet, I know you will believe it, I walked right over to one of those boxes and pulled out this.

It is an official piece of 1/8" diameter white plastic suitable for side dots!

I was really dreading looking for it, but it took me maybe 15 seconds to find it.

Really.

I just hope it is enough for two (2) necks.

The second piece, which I know is also in that room, may not be as easy to find.

While I am contemplating drilling some holes in a neck that I thought was COMPLETELY FINISHED I am going to smear some grain filler on an ash body.

The product that I am using is from Luthiers Mercantile International.

It is some sort of pinkish-orange goop made up primarily of what are probably glass micro-spheres. It is water based.

I'm just going to put it on pretty thick.

Being sure to push it into the grain.

Let it dry.

Sand it with 220.

That's what I have done before and it seems to work.

I've also grain-filled with multiple (and I mean MULTIPLE) coats of DEFT sanding/sealer and that seems to work as well.

If you know what I mean.

During the rain I sprayed more sealer on four bodies, but you've seen that before.

Tomorrow we might start sparkling a couple of them. That will be exciting and we might take some photos.

I finished contemplating drilling holes in that neck for those sides dots and decided to give it a go.

You would've really thought that I (or one of you eagle eyes) would have noticed they were missing. Now that I know they are not there it is pretty obvious that they are not.

A 1/8" drill, some side dot material, and a real 1st class vernier caliper to try to get them in the right place, is the equipment we should need.

No real need for mega-horsepower to drill through that binding material.

We can turn the chuck by hand without any trouble.

This should be the cat's pajamas for holding in that white stuff...and filing any sloppiness that drill bit may have created.

and once it is dry it can be trimmed with a flush-cutting saw

I still feel like a dunderhead for forgetting them the first time around.

If you know what I mean.

This shot is the closest to a top-of-neck shot that I've seen on the sparkle-cawber, and it really doesn't show anything. If I'm gonna be part of your QA, I'm going to need a better view.

If you know what I mean.

With all those dashes, who could have seen a few missing DOTS...

I think you might have experienced snow blindness during the build.

Every time I look at another pic of that thing, I want one like that even more.

Considering the pile of Tele's I have, that is deplorable to even think that, no less type it.

I know what you mean.

My apologies for my lapse in providing you with the information to do your job.

I'll try not to let it happen again.

If you know what I mean!

Ahhhh...

DOTS!

Friday night I'll be able to see where I am.

Now back to Sparklebodies for a bit.

On solid-paint guitars, this stuff, if you can find it, is really useful for filling in "oopses" real fast.

Don't go using it on see-through finishes though.

Putty knife it on. It dries real fast.

Sand it smooth and it is ready to go.

Ready...

Set...

Go!

Let's watch some paint dry!

I have to "work" tomorrow. (Do you all feel sorry for me?)

Hopefully on Thursday I can start flaking one of these.

Before I do anymore on the Ash, we have to decide what "color" it is going to be.

Actually the only discussion about the "color" of the Ash body is "what color of butterscotch."

There are so many of them you know!

Anybody know where I can mail order some Mohawk toners?

You could try here:

www.pondcovepaint.com

Radio Daze also has them, but only in typical radio cabinet colors:

www.radiodaze.com
