Clipping both ends will allow the fret to fit in between the binding, without the tang sticking into and forcing out the binding.

a closer view of the right side

20 more to go

Then I can glue and hammer them in.

This might actually get finished some day.

I've got four (4) of them I can say that about.

As Ian Tyson so aptly put it, "Someday soon..."

Here are the frets, cut (pretty much) to length, with freshly nipped tangs.

We also have some High Energy Fretting Food on hand.

Here you can see how I used the Dremel to extend the fret slots into the checkerboard.

It would be much neater to cut that slot before the binding is glued on.

Oh well...next time!

To help the frets stick where there is no tang and to the plastic of the binding, some CA will go into the slot.

The some CA will be applied to the tang of the fret.

Then we will be ready for the BIG EVENT!

We'll put the fret in place...

then mash it on down with the hammer.

I haven't gotten a new dead-blow hammer...but I did change the tape!

Repeat 20 times and I have a fretted neck.

We'll let the CA dry for a day and then start filing them down and cleaning up the squeezed out glue.

Buck,
What's the radius on the neck you're doing currently (12" radius?)? That looks pretty flat across the face, or is it because the fret wire is so curved and my eyes are playing tricks on me?

Oh and by the way, I've ordered some stripper dust from the local arts and craft store.
I saw some glitter paint there that was called "Opal". Very cool if you wanted to do a white sparklecaster?

Have you considered doing glass glitter? Link to site - Oh the colours!!!
(Butterscotch glass glitter)

It's your eyes.

How did I forget to post these?

My trusty old Stew-Mac 7.25" radius sanding block matches up fine with the fingerboard.

With some 220 grit paper it cleaned up the surface real fine...

before I messed it up with glue while fretting it.

So another soul is lost to the siren lure of sparkles!

That glass glitter looks really nice.

You know, Fender legend has it that Buck and Don's original sparkle Teles were done with crushed glass. I don't know if that is true or not...but it looks like I am going to get to try it!

Thanks for the info.

I know, I know! I'm gonna be pulling a train of shopping carts full of Telecasters soon too!

But this is Buck we're talking about here and it just wouldn't be right if he didn't have a glass glitter guitar now would it?
I'm just dying to see what he can do with it?
I think it'll just floor the rest of us when he does one!
If you know what I mean?

Yes it does.

But it has to be covered with something.

Miracle goop that costs $$$

or

Clear lacquer that takes forever and time = $$$

Certainly is intriguing

Ach, don't worry about covering it, and you'll never need another manicure.

Cool, cool, cool! Always entertaining and inspiring!

I asked a couple weeks ago about the channel route and think I didn't ask the question well. I get the varying early production techniques and all that, but what I want to know is why did you do one of these with a channel route, and one without? Maybe it's just what the customer wanted?

Thank you.

As for the routes...with these two bodies, it is just how they were.

One body I had laying around here...I think it is a USACG...that's the one without the diagonal route.

The other is a Brian Poe and it had the route when it got here.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Well, we're back for a bit. (Took a long walk along the Mississippi tonight...sometimes a man's just got to do what a man's got to do...if you know what I mean.)

The frets are in, but the ends are running wild, and there is some CA gumbying up the fingerboard.
