Hey Buck- Here's a link to the hook and loop polishing pads.

http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/...lishing+pad.do

Their polishing products look promising as well, but I haven't tried them. My son uses them and swears by them, and they are reasonably priced.

Look at that 3" DA polisher. Looks great- might have to get one.

Based upon some REALLY GOOD advice that I have been getting, the mail man brought a package from Mr. Rockler today.

It was filled with 5" hook & loop Micro Mesh pads for my DA.

Looks to me like the old Doublerubycaster has "the shine" now!

Thank you kindly kids.

Now I just have to get the necks cleaned up so I can start bolting this bad boy together.

Then I get to make a pickguard for it!

That should be more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

Buck,
I have a Rockler right down the street here...
Pray tell what I need to purchase and spare the price..
My wife is gonna kill me.....
I take it I can use my orbital sander as the polisher...save $$ on a polisher....
Do I need Dupont #7?

Ahhh...another rookie asking a rookie a question!

You have to remember, I am making this stuff up as I go along. There are so many people on here helping me out with tips and advice...I hardly feel competent to say anything...if you know what I mean.

But here's what I plan to try the next time I polish a guitar.

Use 600 grit paper on my 'electic DA sander. (I don't know if a DA sander and an orbital sander are the same thing.)

Then I will start the Micro Mesh system...going right up through the grits. Using just a little bit of water. (It is an electric sander after all!)

Rockler has a little pack of nine (9) Micro Mesh 5" hook and loop disks. Right here I am sure they are available from lots of places...and perhaps cheaper...but if you have a Rockler right down the street.

Seems like good stuff.

Have a good day.

I had to go to a school board meeting tonight...trying to prepare them for next month when we intend to ask them for a ton and a half of money to dump into my IT operation, so didn't get much work done...

Did get to check the fit on a tuner though.

It is still red.

I'm really starting to see the light at the end of this tunnel. I might get to spend Saturday making a pickguard for it.

Let's take a closer look at installing some tuners.

This neck was drilled for vintage-style Klusons. Some big-ol' Gotohs are going on it. The holes on the back need to be enlarged. We're going to be using a 3/8" Forstner bit, so we will want something to guide the point of the bit. Inserting a sacrificial plug in the hole will do the trick.

A touch of CA glue will keep them in place until they are drilled out.

The Gotohs are slightly tapered, and seem to be a bit bigger than 3/8" at the base. So we'll take a regular old 3/8" bit, chuck it up, put a piece of tape on it as a depth stop, put the drill in reverse, and make that hole just a bit bigger.

The screws that hold the tuners in place on the back side don't look any too robust...we want to be sure to drill pilot holes that are the proper size.

Once again we are using a piece of tape as a depth stop. We really don't want to drill through the headstock. That would be bad. Really bad.

Once the holes are drilled, I like to wax up the screws and put them in to cut the threads in the wood. Doing it now makes installing the tuners later much easier.

Then we can go to the flip side and put the topside screw-in bushings in place.

After they get lined up and we put the screws in the back, it looks like a finished headstock.

But wait! There's more!

We have a couple of headstocks to try to sparkle tonight...

First we will mask them off

and then shoot them with some silver basecoat.

We'll pull the tape, clean up some paint issues, and remask.

Then shoot some clear DEFT and sprinkle on some sparkles

One of them looks the way we want it to look...

and I am happy with it.

The other one though...something went wrong...maybe it is just too cold...so...what do we do with lacquer when things go wrong?

We wipe it down with acetone and say, "No sweat, we'll try it another day!"

Buck, it must be that birdseye maple rejecting it because it thinks it's too pretty to be covered in sparkles.

Thank you.

The container says 0.015" or 375 microns in the ever popular hex shape.

I think that is the largest size I can reasonable expect to get through a spray gun...should I decide to spray it.

More encounters with Stripper Dust

We're gonna try one more time to cover up those birdseyes.

Masking tape and a silver basecoat.

Then we'll take it out to the Stripper Dust Application Chamber, spray on some DEFT, and then sprinkle on the Stripper Dust...

Ahhhh! This would me Gypsy Rose Lee proud!

let's take off the tape while things are still sticky and shake off the loose stuff.

This is SO MUCH better than yesterday. It was certainly worth the extra time and effort to do it again.

We'll let it dry tonight. Tomorrow it can be cleaned up, and then we can start the clearing process.

About covering up those birdseyes...how many birdseye guitars do you see? How many sparkle guitars do you see? Have I made my point? The rest of the neck has enough of those birdsmarks in it to more than make up for what has been covered.

I'm not much into those fancy schmancy lookin guitars, but I could see myself playing one that color.

I'd have to dress up, though

Buck, hope I didn't offend you by my earlier post. Was just having a bit of fun.

I think this color sparkle is going to be my favorite.

Thank you for this bit'o wisdom. I was at the drill press yesterday with my son's Samick neck which is getting a much needed make over, doing exactly the same thing...Kluson to Gotoh. I was 'fretting' about how not to mess up this neck. So I took a break and did
