I never used a respirator spraying lacquer (always with enamels). Of course that was the old school way, and I figured with no overspray, and since I could still smell the lacquer through the respirator, there was no need. That may explain why I only have a few brain cells left. |

They do look ready for a holiday gig, nice work as always.
How many coats of deft will it take to smooth the surface of a sparkle caster? Less than three?

Doubt it. I have about 6 coats of DEFT on the green one. Will probably put about as many more on it. The red one(s) will probably get a miracle two-part automotive clear. We'll be able to do that in three coats. The red flake is laying MUCH flatter than the green. Probably because the red was sprayed on and the green was dumped on with a flower sifter. Go figure! Only time will tell which gives the better looking finish.

gotcha, thanks for the specs on the sparkle. I was just about to scan back through the thread for the size. So if you were to guess dixie cups equivalents to cans of deft where do you estimate your gonna end up? Looks like a 6 oz dixie and deft spray is what 16 oz? Thanks again for takin' the time.

Bucko,
http://www.kitkraft.biz/catalog/Mirr..._1-p-2886.html How about a mirror tile telecaster ![]() I was hunting for sparkle today in the sizes you mentioned and came across the glitter store. Where do you get yours from if I may ask? |

I see they also have 3/16 mosaic tiles. That is almost small enough that I could see using it.
Don't think I will, but I bet it could be done. By the way, thanks for covering my six on this. Not like I don't already have enough projects going!

So it looks like most of the time I am using about 1.5 - 2.0 oz of warm glossy brush on DEFT mixed with a tablespoon of sparkles. On a couple of coats I put in a thinner can cap full of thinner...but that made it too thin...took forever to dry (I guess the thinner that I have acts as a retarder)...but also allowed it to flow out REALLY well. Just a trade off I guess. That is about as precise I can be...because I am pretty sloppy about the whole thing. I imagine that people who really know what they are doing have all sorts of secret formulae.

Lovely day outside...if you're a duck...so let's try to get the flake on the Doublerubycaster!
First we need to mask off the binding to spary the black basecoat. ![]() Gonna try it diffently today. Mask the sides first... ![]() then the top You might remember my simple, expedient paint booth designed to keep the flake from getting over everything... ![]() Well...THIS THING DOESN'T FIT! I also used a can of FLAT black KRYLON Camo paint that I bought for something once upon a time. Underneath that flake, I reckon black will be black.
