Duplicolor...

It takes as long to cure as nitro lacquer does...wet sanded after about 8 coats of clear over the color, then polished and got a nice deep metalflake finish. Just don't sand through the clear coat or you'll ruin the "glitter"...put on plenty of clear and you'll be ok.

My CS sparkle from 1994
I have a Custom Shop silver sparkle (with just a touch of gold in the silver) made in 1994. It's a great instrument, light as a feather and very resonant. Apparently its made as a replica of a 1967-68 Tele (the logo script matches a transition script too...). The only drag is that it is equipped with Texas Specials, which I don't think does it justice...I'm thinking of replacing them, I'm just not sure with what (maybe some Nocasters...?) Suggestions welcome..
In my edition of A.R. Duchossoir "The Fender Telecaster" book there's a picture of Bob Dylan from the early nineties playing the exact same CS sparkle model ,and as it happens Bobs sparkle is on display in the local Hard Rock Cafe here in Copenhagen... ![]()

Hegn, Your Sparkle Tele looks to be just like mine (see post above). It is from the same era, has a highly figured neck, and Texas Special pickups. I changed the plain white guard to a pearl guard to match my Sparkle Strat's guard. That guitar is also from about the same time and has TS pickups as well. I like the Texas Specials in my Strat, but agree they rob some tone from the Tele. My Highway 1 Tele's pickups sound better to me!!

" Apparently its made as a replica of a 1967-68 Tele "
Indeed, Fender made around 100 sparkle finished Teles in that time frame, split between silver & gold. Half had black binding and were called "Buck Owens" models, the other half were without binding and simply considered a special edition. I have one of the latter, a rosewood board '68 in sparkle silver. All came with a special brown tolex case, slightly smaller than the regular, black tolex case. It's a long, sad story, which I posterd over on the Fender Forum a while back. If I can figure out how to UL pictures to the site I'll copy it over here. Ok, I think I've got it. This is what remains of an original '68 silver sparkle tele that I've had since '73. I got this in a trade with legendary steel player, the late Kenny Trantham, who I gigged with back in the day. Kenny was the second owner and called it "Ol Sparkly". Unfortunately for originality's sake and the historical preservation of rare & precious Telecasters, this was a poor workingman's axe that got hacked, er, "modified", heavily over the years.
It eventually got to the point where not much was left of the original guitar other than the neck. The big loss was that early on we stripped off the silver sparkle finish. We eventually routed the original body for humbuckers, put on Shaller tuners, wired it with mini switches & pull pots, the usual '70s *& '80s curses. Eventually the 7-piece body started to fall apart and was replaced with a Warmoth replica. (Best I know the original body got used for firewood.) In the early '90s Stan Jay of Mandolin Brothers told me it had been one of about 25 silver sparkle Teles Fender had done in '67 - '68, and in original condition would be worth, well, a lot...gulp! Larry Wexler (Wexler Vintage Guitars) worked for Stan at that time and knew the history of the late 60s Fender sparkle guitars well. Figuring it was all water over the dam, I didn't do anything with the guitar but play it for the next 16 years. But, last year I decided to at least get it back to a visual approximation of its original spec. Fortunately, I had kept most of the original parts, and what I no longer had I was able to either replace with Fender reissue or scrounge on eBay. I ordered a new body in sparkle silver from Warmoth, but while I was waiting for it to arrive, up popped an outrageous Marty Bell sparkle silver body on eBay, which you'll see in the photo below. (I've since swapped them over and the body you see here will form the basis for a new Partscaster.) The Warmoth is beautiful, but a bit less dramatic and more authentic, at least from what we can remember. The first replacement body was simply left intact with all its components and, with a new neck & tuners, became another Partscaster. (Looks like the darn thing is havng offspring!) What's original is the neck, tuners, E&B string tree, neck plate & screws, bridge & screws (not on the guitar right now), string ferrules, bridge pickup (Fralin rewind), springs & screws, switch & tip, knobs, jack & cup assembly, assorted screws and the original small brown case. What's new is the body, pickguard, neck pickup (90s Fender Vintage Original), control plate, pots & wiring. No longer vintage original, but a great guitar with a lot of nostalgia mixed in. That it sounds killer just adds to the cool, too.

LOL, thanks! (Paris might look good in that color, don't you think?) What you can't see in the photo is the killer birdseye maple neck. It's sort of a "C" profile, been a great player, no matter what body it ended up on.

Actually mine came in a black tolex case (just like an original late 60'es case, but without the Fender script logo)...

Just thought I'd add that the A. Duchossoir's Telecaster history you refered to has a picture of one of the original 67 - 68 sparkle gold Teles on p. 41., and also a black & white photo of Buck Owens & Don Rich playing examples of the "Buck Owens" model of the same era, which was identical except for black body binding. Can't find any refernce to confirm, however it appears most, if not all, of the Buck Owens guitars of that era had maple-capped boards, rather than rosewood. |

Just found this on an old laptop I was going through for some files. Apparently I had some time on my hands that day. This is my #1 to this day, a '93 CS gold sparkle with a bunch of upgrades.

My CS "Buckocaster" masterbuilt by Alan Hamel. I know I've shown these before, but I never tire of doing so. Hope you don't tire of seeing them. Links rather than pics because they're pretty large.
