For the past few years I've been busily gigging my alder bodied/rosewood board partcaster...my avatar...and I couldn't imagine anything else replacing it in my affections. My
Numero Uno. Fat 60s 'C' (or 'D'?) profile neck with 12" radius and vintage frets. And I've been a staunch advocate of rosewood fretboards too.
But my 50s Classic Esquire that I've converted into a 2 pickup 'tele' seems to have changed things. After gigging it the past few weeks I've become accustomed to the maple neck and 7.25" radius and my playing style seems to have adapted to it. Tonight I brought out my old number 1 I described above...and I could hardly play it. I no longer like the feel of it at all, and I also find that I now prefer the spankier ash/maple sound of the '50s' guitar to the darker alder/rosewood combination (both guitars have identical pickups, BTW). After the break I switched to the Esquire tele and it was like going home. The neck is
gorgeous.
I almost feel abit guilty abandoning my old workhorse, but things change I guess.
Maybe I'll look into a 50's-style maple replacement neck for the old guitar. Its neck is almost ready for a refret anyway...and one tuner is abit naff.
I might change my avatar, too.
Anyone else find their preferences change after several seemingly contented years?
