Semi-relicing a fretboard

Can somebody tell me how to dirty up a maple fretboard? Not quite the Danny Gatton look, But four or five frets worth of scrunge?

probably a very light scratching with rather fine sandpaper in the places where you see this often (first several frets, right under strings) then rub something in it? or maybe the open grain would absorb dirt...

The guy that owned this guitar must've loved "A," cause the area behind the second fret is dark. I intend to play the guitar, and any other "relic-ing" done to the guitar will be good, honest playing wear.

Play a lot with long fingernails... an eat some fried chicken or ribs before playin without washing your hands first.

Find a pic of a guitar you want to emulate, and--with your stings on--mark the areas you want to distress...

Use a small scraper or exacto knife sharpened like a scraper to create your patterns, then sand to achieve homogeneity....

This site is a good one for mixing up some solutions to age your work...
