Pre serial number Teles?

Lately I have seen 2 or 3 auctions for "pre serial number " teles. Like this one:

What is that? Why would a Tele not have a serialnumber??

The serial number is AO33611. Not a Pat. Pending # :(

So just another MIJ '62 RI. (Walks over, looks at his own...) Yep, mine has an AOxxxxx snr. also...

But that leaves the other half of the question: Is there such a thing as "pre serialnumber teles"?
