Gina Gershon: good news/bad news

Gina Gershon played the Middle East last night with backing band Boys Against Girls.

First the good news: she played a Tele. Two of 'em actually. One a blonde custom shop, the other a black one.

Bad news: couldn't hear her guitar.

Good news: probably a good thing since she only recently started playing...

Bad news: songs were awful. No melodies or hooks and dull flat chords.

Good news: she looked damn good up there with the guitar.

Bad news:she also had every Joan Jett pose down, and looked like she planned each "pose" with the guitar, hair flip, etc.

Good news: did I mention she was playing a Tele?

Bad news: she did a really horrific cover in ballard form of Black Sabbath's Paranoid.

Good news: she did an amazing cover of the Beatle's I'm So Tired. Really good.

Bad news: her pitch was generally OK but wavering- and her voice was just uninteresting.

Good news: she looked really good in the black t-shirt and red pants with leather jacket.

Bad news: you really got a sense that she was "acting" and not "playing."

Good news: she has a new movie coming out called Prey for Rock and Roll that looks good...

Bad news: I feel like I saw it already last night.

Good news: one of the friends I was with got her autograph after the show...

Bad news: that meant we were stuck there for an extra half an hour...

Good news: that meant a yummy slice of pizza from Hi-Fi Pizza next door...

Bad news:overall, the band and singing and songs were pretty terrible.

Good news: she looked damn good up there and did I mention she was playing a Tele?

Billy

other bad news: couldn't find my camera before we left or I would have posted some pictures...

"Yummy" is relative. It always hits the spot after a night of boozing, but their pizza ain't exactly prize-winning!

Are you sure you want to know? I don't think I do, based on the review.

She's an "actress". 1990s lesbian/trash chic. You won't find her most popular movies on the Disney channel-well give em another 10 years and you probably will, given the decline and inevitable fall...

Okay, I guess that article

answers a lot for me. Like Mark, I've lost all interest. Too bad she plays (or tries to) a Tele, but... but, the Tele is the proletarian instrument. It's there for everyone.

Well, at least she looks good for 41.
She should skew the median age of pre-fab
stars to at least 16 1/2.

ummm... she was in Showgirls and the general concensus was that she was the only one who could act in it...

the other bad news was the huge dyke showing at the show. The three heterosexual girls there were with boyfriends....

here's a picture from the movie. She doesn't actually have the tattoos and plays a Tele in real life.

I'm with Mark. Completely blank stare (even after looking at the picture), and no - I don't watch Disney either.

Inevitable question #2: What is "Middle East", other than a geographic location?

The middle east refers to a section in Cambridge on Mass Ave. Its where the club is, and what it is named after.

I think Gina is a pretty great independent movie actor. But this is really a complete nonfactor in the music scene even though the club was sold out. I am sure it was just the lets gawk at Gina factor. And face it she is gawkable.

I heard the songs. She and Petty wrote one I think is better than the girls' whose autbiography is the basis for this film.

We still can't get a gig there. Its booked by a guy from a band called Cracktorch, who are similar in some ways to us.

You do the math.

Its a tough town. Even tougher if you are a old fat bas*#%rd like me. If this was 83 and I weighed 135 pounds again, I am sure we would have no trouble.

The Middle East is an awesome nightclub. Downstairs gets some pretty good acts and it's a large club- Kings X played there last night with Fishbone opening. Upstairs is smaller (where Gina played). they have great food and a belly dancer in the third room...

It is a bit of a nightmare to get to play there. We have to finish our CD before they'll even consider us.... fortunately a cute bass player means no one has to look at me ;-)

Gina Gershon is much easier on the eyes than the old bald guy. Probably treats her guitars with more respect too!

Yeah...

~~not sure what you mean.

...i'm even sure that I even WANT to know what you mean.

But what *I* meant was that she's getting by on her smile not her guitar playing based on the earlier review.
Of course I knew what you meant. This thread has me rolling...I mean, what's not to love?

The really sad thing is, I wasn't kidding. Country and blues guys have it easy. You can look like complete garbage and its like a badge of honor. If you play original rock n roll music foregt about it. Especially in this town. As Jack Black said in School of Rock. "I like to eat. So What."

Trust me, just ask Frank Black how he likes the fact that he can write better songs today, than he ever did and his album sales have dipped lets say signiicantly since his days with The Pixies. Rock album sales are directly negatively proprtional to your weight gain nowadays.

Yeah, I hear you there. It's (music) always been hype. I mean—Frank Sinatra, Jr., Dino, Desi and Billy, Nancy Sinatra, Wilson Phillips(whatever), Milli-Vanilli, Madonna, Britney, ad absurdium.

The MBA's that run the music biz have been laughing up their sleeves at all of us for years, as they foist yet another anorexic, no-talent or low-talent fop upon us...reaping obnoxious and undeserved amounts of cash for both them and their golfing buddies. Is it any wonder the music biz is what it iz?

Folks like John Hammond, Sr—who signed everybody from Dylan to Stevie Ray Vaughn, (and many more) —risking his career with each, are the exceptions. We are in a "youth-driven" culture, talent be damned--or at least mostly ignored.

So. I sit here at 357 years of age, (in dog years), and hardly anything amazes me any more. But I am nearly always amused. At the variety, anyhow—and every once in awhile, at the sheer persistence of real talent.

Brett

I don´t know he´s already bald, why does he want a fake bald wig......?

We use to play in small community houses, out in the countryside....you know the kind of places that has or has had some kind of dilletante, variety theater troupe that reherses for a year and perform for the locals.....You´d be amazed at the kind of cool/weird props we find lying around backstage or other places....sometimes it´s hard to resist putting them on, preferably without anybody noticing, and hit some weird notes, to make them turn around to look whats going on.....then again if nobody´s noticing, that can be kind of awkward......Last weekend we had 3 or 4 50´s actors playing drums......Somtimes when you´re so tired you wanna throw up, crazy stuff like that can save the night.
