OK Telecaster for jazz?
Hi. I'm 10 yrs. old. My dad listens to jazz which I like a lot. I want to learn to play jazz--but on a guitar. My mom does not play any instruments but she took me to a music store. I looked at some electric guitars which I think are really ccol.
Most of the guitars were way, way too much money. But the Telecasters were not so much--in about a year I could save enuf allowance $. The salesman said I should ask my guitar teacher about a Telecaster. He also said to use it for jazz I need to get permission from Mrs. Leo Flender and from a group called the "Vinatage Police Corps". I told this to my teacher and he said I should ask this group. He let me use his account and I hope I don't get in trouble cuz I'm not 13 yet. Anyway, do I really have to ask permission from some old lady who probably smells like my grandmother? And what about these Vinatage guys. I mean its not like I'm hurting anyone--even if I can't play very well yet. Burris |

There are a lot of Jazz players who use teles. You can use any telel model you want really. Some play the single coils and some play humbuckers. Many folks who do jazz seem to perfer humbuckers in the neck most pickup position. Many like the alder body (what come on a Standard Tele).

'72 Custom
works for me. In the wee hours of the morning with the room deadly quiet where it's just me, the '72, a borrowed Poly Tone amp, and a Danecho, well it's enough to bring a grown man (or a ten year old with mature taste) to tears..
The '72 Custom is the best of both worlds and worth considering if, in the future, your tastes take you elsewhere when you reach a more discernible age.. http://www.fender.com/gear/gear.php?partno=0137502 |

Oh yes...
quite definitely... apart from the sound, it flows like a river... excellent for borderline jazz things, fusion or whatever you want to call it - listen to the very excellent Chris Spedding on Nucleus 'Elastick Rock', Battered Ornaments 'Mantle-Piece' and Jack Bruce 'Songs For A Taylor'!

On more than one occasion I've seen some jazz players come in to the music store and leave with a Squire Tele. At first I couldn't figure out why an accomplished musician would buy Squire, but man some of those guys got an unbelievable sound from those guitars.

It's interesting how people can read the same post and come up with different interpretations of it, eh? Maybe it's all related to how much coffee you've had before you read. Or, in my case, how the devastating Cubs collapse has brought my cynicism to the fore. I smell a TROLL too.
