The 6 Year Tele… The rest of the story
This is gonna be a Loooong post, so get comfortable.
Ok, Say “I told ya so” because I still have not received a Tele from Jay Monterose… but keep reading. Not long after my last post concerning my infamous “Vintique Tele” I found out that Chihoe Hahn had parted ways with Jay Monterose/Vintique. I do not know the details as to why and even if I did, it’s not my place to say. Chihoe told me that he was very sorry that I did not receive my Tele as promised, but he had done his best to try and get Jay to honor my deadline of March 3rd, 2007 . It was now out of his hands and he wished me luck. A few days later I spoke to Jay and he was fired up about getting me my Tele, but because of his “split” with Chihoe, it would take a bit more time. This was about 2 months ago. I spoke to Jay 3 times since then. The last time was about 3 weeks ago. He called me to see “what we needed to do to get this Tele finished” Apparently what he “needed” was $1900 MORE!!! Yep, you read that right. When I calmly told Jay that they had agreed to send me my Tele regardless of any “balance” I might owe, his reply was “ I don’t make guitars for free!” And he said he would “sell the guitar for $3500” He had also asked me for my “original paper work” which I gladly sent him. I also pointed out that the original invoice price for the guitar was $2108.00 and I had paid $1600 plus shipped him a Thermometer case valued at $200. ( that means I only owed him $508 of the original price) He acknowledged that I had paid him $1600 and the case was mine. He said “If you want, I can sell this guitar and send you a refund and your case back.” (by the way, he said Vince Gill was very interested in the guitar... right). So, that was 3 weeks ago, he is not returning my calls and I have yet to see a refund check or a return of my Case, and No… I don’t ever expect to. But alas…. You’ve not heard “the rest of the story” Today, I woke up to find a package on my door step. It was a box that said “Fender”. I opened it up to find a gorgeous Black & White Tweed case. Inside was this: ![]() ![]() ![]() This was not an unexpected package. About the time that Jay Monterose was asking me for more money, I received an e-mail out of the blue from Chihoe Hahn that said this: June 4th, 2007 Hey Danny Just checking in with you to see if you've had any luck ... have you? I have my shop up and running pretty much full speed now, and am producing some great guitars. I have thought about it a lot, and would like to get you a guitar -- on me. (you can see some pictures of what i'm building at www.hahnguitars.com) Anyway, let me know -- and if I can get you a guitar, that's well worth it for me.... and you will get a guitar that will be absolutely killer. Best regards, Chihoe I was absolutely blown away. I had made it clear in the original “5 year Tele” thread that Chihoe had been honest and up front with me and gave me no reason to doubt his word. And I was right. I told him that it was not his place to send me a guitar and that he owed me nothing. It was Jay that owed me. But Chihoe insisted. I told him that if he felt this strongly about it, then I would be honored to own one of his guitars. And now… I do! The guitar is absolutely AMAZING! It’s light weight, 2 piece ash body. It has hand wound Seymour Duncan pickups and it sounds great! It seriously plays better than my 1994 Gatton Sig. Tele. The only thing lacking right now, is knobs. He promised that they would be in the mail to me in 2 weeks… I think I can trust him. This by no means is an advertisement for Hahn Guitars. It’s just pure FACT! Chihoe stepped up and did what Jay would not and HAS NOT done. I am grateful and despite the fact that this guitar is absolutely outstanding, it’s one of the most cherished guitars I will ever own. There are good people and Chihoe Hahn is most certainly one of them and I thank him dearly. As for Jay…. I believe the lyrics to that song go “ Someday, Some Way, ohhhh . Someday Some way” Thanks to all of you and Thanks to the TDPRI Your Pal - Danny Thompson |

It is a beautiful guitar. Chihoe looks like he came through with a really great guitar and if you like it.... I like the ending. You found something good (and someone who was good) in the end. There is no recompense for the aggravation and dishonesty from Jay and Vintique (one and the same).....
I genuinely am glad that you got a guitar that looks to be high quality out of all of it. I think Chihoe has done some good things to build a name as an honorable guy who probably got sucked into a whirlpool of BS As for Jay and Vintique. If anyone ever asks me about them I will disencourage any notion of doing business with them EVER. I'd love to have the luxury of all kinds of revenge fantasies...but, I think it is best to avoid that rat's nest and move on.... Anyone who buys from those people is enabling others to be ripped off. |

When I saw the headline, I was sooooooo hoping to read about a positive outcome for you.
Ok, in some way, it is. Great move from Chihoe Hahn! But your "conversation" with Jay is so out of this world. This guy really has the nerves to ask for another $1900 I would stop the conversation immediately (if there is any at all), hire a lawyer and sue this thief. Btw: Have fun with your new guitar. |

Danny,
I followed the other (5 year) thread for a while, and I was very upset and felt sad for the situation you had gotten into. I could picture myself in your shoes, since I have ordered a few guitars and parts over the years from the US (it's just more expensive over here) and sometimes it takes a little more time than originally stated... One time the store owner got sick and had to be at the hospital and therfor didn't ship it for over a month... I didn't ofcourse know about this until after he got back... Nor during the time could he ofcourse reply to my mail... then you start thinking what will I do if they don't send it to me. I have so far gotten all the things I have ordered, but I really felt with you. I will stay clear of this Jay guy who is acting like a criminal in this case. I was anyway so glad to read this thread and to see that there still are honest good guys out there. This is a grand gesture of Hahn and the guitar looks absolutely stunning! But Danny, it was certainly also your time to run into som good luck so you deserve it more than well. Once again thanks for posting this story with a happy ending, I am glad for you! Best regards /Roger

Well you should have taken the one they offered you that they sold on Ebay.
But you did get something. You were way too nice. But Chihoe Hahn was smart enough to get away from Jay and gave you something so he deserves a medal and Jay well you knoiw what he deserves.

You got a great guitar, that's what you signed up for in the first place. I think you should play it with joy and move forward from here. Chihoe is a stand-up guy who stood up for someone who apparently doesn't deserve it. He will be repaid, I hope in this life. I hope you can repay him by paying it forward. I am greatly saddened by these stories of Jay. I had a friend who had great dealings with Jay and liked him a lot. This friend turned out to be a snake in the grass. May they live together forever.
OK, I've got some unresolved issues. -soma5 |

Danny,
Like many others here who have been following your story, I am delighted to hear that you finally got something you enjoy playing! Guys like Chihoe remind us that despite what we see on TV and read in the papers there is still some good in the world, whereas guys like Jay remind us to be very careful and extremely wary. Thanks for the update!

I checked hahnguitars's site, and from what I saw, you now have a guitar that is as good if not better than what you expected.
Chihoe seems to be looking toward the future instead of using the past to sell guitars. I wish him all the best. I am glad for you, and now that you have what you were waiting for, I think that you could now ask Vintique for a refound because he didn't send you what he was supposed to, unless Chihoe asked you to stop everything. Indeed, you now have a very nice Tele now... Gilles

It is good to see that someone will go beyond what what is "required" to to what is decent. Perhaps not completly "right" as this does let Jay off the hook. Time and God will deal with him, would not want his Karma for 19,000,000.00, let alone 1900.00
Chihoe will gain, Jay will decrease.

Chihoe has done something that is absolutely amazing...A total act of goodwill. He obviously understands your dilemma and has gone out of his way to try to somehow help you out. He has scored some major Karma and also major respect and admiration for his business practices...and I'm sure it will pay him back many times over!!!!! Kudo's to Chihoe!!!
As for Jay...I would not let up on this scumbag one bit. I would demand my money and case/parts back ASAP. I would pursue legal action against him. (actually if it was me he owed money/guitar...he would get a visit from my MC club) Danny, I'm glad you got something out of this!

Great looking guitar! Chihoe is a very generous soul.
I'd still go after Jay for the guitar you ordered and mostly paid for. And while you're at it, you might what to drop Vince Gill a line. |

I would track down this Jay guy and tell him what I've told anyone else who's owed me money,
"I want my money back and if not, I'll get my money's worth!"

Congratulations, Danny! Six years is a long time to wait for something that's rightfully yours. I read yoru original five-year post and followed it with all the hope in the world. Someone with as much trust and patience as you shouldn't have to pay for it by being deceived and strung along. It's infuriating that this clown would turn around and ask you for more money, as if he hadn't already stolen enough from you. I'm glad you got yours, and I'm glad Chihoe Hahn was able to get some of the bas taste out of his mouth that Jay Monterose must have left behind. That's a beauty of a guitar. I think Jay still owes you a guitar though.
