The Pine in the body blanks looks kind of like the bodies on Ebay.
http://www.guitarmill.com/products.html Could it be some nice pine looking a bit like ash? Gilles

Well, the seller on Ebay has sold plenty of pine bodies, and their feedback is great. I'd imagine if someone got a body other than the one pictured in their auction, they'd be leaving appropriate feedback about their transaction.

Far as I know, yes.
As well as the black truss-rod-less Esquires prior to the Broadcaster. Does anyone know where to purchase any well-seasoned pine blanks other than Guitar Mill?

My Pinecaster is a GENUINE South Carolina Southern Yellow Pine Body or GSCSYPB for short. (keep up with the acronyms folks)
And man does it have some dents from me playing clubs regularly with it. No buckle rash cause I dont wear huge belt buckles. But I have dropped it, knocked it over, bumped into stuff, and even had a schaller strap lock "strip out" and the whole deal come tumbling to the ground. But it still sounds like it always has. If not a bit more darker than it original did a year ago when I built it. But i think if your not as clumsy as I am, your pine body should be in good shape for a good long time. Back to the subject at hand. I always figured Leo just used what was always readily available and I considered adding a truss rod and improvement on the ole Tele.

wouldn't using a hardener defeat the reason for using pine in the first place ? pine is light and resonate and is warmer sounding than ash - i think its softness is an important factor in the sound it produces - think about acoustic guitars with cedar tops - cedar topped acoustics are warmer and louder than similar guitars with spruce or other harder tops - cedar is difficult to work with and dents/marks easily - some custom builders prefer cedar tops for its sound advantages and feel its pros outweigh its cons - same for spalted maple tops - untreated spalted maple is very warm and resonate - stabilized spalted maple not so much - you get the look but sacrifice the sound quality - pine is what it is - it is lightweight, resonate and sounds great but it also dings easily and sometimes shows pitch/resin - just depends on what floats your boat and what combination of looks and tone turns you on -
- i'm not a complete idiot ... some parts are missing - |

Pine down this way comes in the form of Pinus radiata. It's not much harder than balsa. I'd say well below 0.25 density (...with 1 being water).
Some of your north american pines are the same density as ash, above 0.5. |
