OK, I'm spilling it.

SUPPLIER: Home Depot
MATERIAL: Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF or particleboard)

Laminate construction - Qty (3) 1/2" thick sheets, screwed and glued
GFS Lil Puncher - $30
StewMac bridge - one of those dreaded 6 saddle types
Electrosocket
No Orange Drop Caps, no pots - pickup wired directly to output jack
50s MIM Neck - awaiting my next real Tele project

The sound clip was played through a Line 6 POD into my computer's sound card.

I have been wanting to do this for a long time, so I thought I would have a little fun with it here on the TDPRI.

BTW: I think sustain is overrated too.

I got it! We should start building guitar bodies out of fingers! Sometimes people say that "tone is in the hands," so maybe we should use whole hands.

Thanks Jack!!

There are some other subtle features:
  • Cut deep chamfers for the drywall screws with a cheap single flute countersink bit to get that flower-pedal appearance
  • Slight misalignment of each layer of particleboard to enhance depth of field
  • Sloppy neck pocket fit

Hehe!

Arrggg..., that's what I meant when I wrote MFC. I don't know why I wrote MFC

Anyway, I'm just glad my ears didn't disappoint me, even if my brain did when I wrote the post

I'm surprised that you didn't shape it as a Tele, even for a test...

Like this...

Nice build...

Having no pot and no cap may be one of the reasons why it has a bit more treble than it would have with a cap and a pot.

Terry ................ I realize it has more of a rectangle shape but you could call it an Esquare.

Are you considering adding a pickguard? It would be a shame to scratch up the finish.

Thanks for the replies. This was fun.

I'll stop and get serious for a moment. Part of the extra highs is due to the lack of a volume pot and tone network obviously. Fuzzy has a schematic out there somewhere that has a bypass switch to go direct to cable, i.e, no volume or tone network. He knows full well about this phenomenon, and discovered it through experimentation long before I attempted to describe it technically here.

Another part has to do with my hearing. My ears are about 30-35dB down at 4kHz, so I naturally boost frequencies in that range. That is not good, because I feel as if my tone is too brittle or ice-pickey for most folks. But then again, Don Rich is one of my guitar heros. In that realm...there is no such thing as too much treble.

All of this is very subjective. There is a specific bridge pickup Tele tone that I go for, right or wrong. It seems that I make every Tele I own pretty much sound the same, using amp/processor settings, no matter what is under the hood.

In the famous mantra of Ron Kirn, the weak link in any instrument is ME, so I'll continue to work on that.

Hehe Hehe Hehe Hehe Hehe ESQUARE!!!

Actually I was thinking about relicing it by driving nails, a small distance into the front, and pulling them out sideways. If I do the right pattern, I'm sure it would accentuate the sonic transparency.

Esquare. That's brilliant, my friend.

Well I'll be...

One of the things that I have to do in the next month is build a couple of double necks (Doublecasters?)...and I have been planning on making an MDF test body...just to see if I had everything in the proper place...now this has me to thinking...

As the Old Road Hog would say...

Mighty fine!

Mighty fine!

Is the center slice cut out to create a chamber or chambers?

In a way this thing is a lot like a Danelectro, only with a thicker top and back...

For your next experiment, try the same thing with some baltic birch plywood.

That there is some dense and heavy ply... interesting suggestion. I bet it'd kill your back, but I'd be very curious about the sound/tone.

...

Oddly enough, that square "shoebox" of a body fits everything about a Telecaster (especially the no-frills functionality)... I sort of like it. Don't save that neck for a "real" project - that MDF Tele is really cool in my book, it already is a real project!!

I knew it wasn't oak really, I have trouble distinguishing between ash and alder never mind guessing what that was made out of. Pretty good idea, and it does sustain well. I think you should put an oak veneer on it though

Must've been all that MDF glue that made me think it was synthetic!

So does it lose any Tele mojo by not having a 3-saddle bridge?
