What to do on a lazy Sunday Afternoon

Y’all know Arlo and I have been working on some really ancient lumber. Some good ‘ol Yaller Pine used in a barn some 168 years ago.. (If I recall, I’m waiting on confirmation). Well, the Beavers got through chewin’ on it, and this is what was left.

As you can see, it might be old, but it’s not locked up in 60 year old technology. Pups are Danny Gatton Bardens. Yeah, I know, like what does Danny know about pickin’ a Tele, but, what the heck. The electronics are a variant of a Dan Armstrong concept using a 5 way and some rather bazaar circuitry. This baby has more voices than a High School Choir during Flu Season.

On the Twangometer, it pegs the needle, really what a phenomenal sound…

Crazy on a Sunday afternoon,
Ron Kirn

That's gorgeous Ron, your work is utterly mouthwatering. Such a great use for some old beautiful lumber that more than likely would have ended up as kindling or some unappreciated piece of furniture...

Great sunbursting!

What stains did you use for those colors? Did you wipe or spray the sunburst?

That's one spankin' plank!

Sweet Mother that's a beautiful guitar! Put a Glendale bridge on it and you might have something.

So when are you going to write a guide on doing that type of sunburst?

Nice Ron... I'd say if the player can play as good as that guitar looks... it will attract significant beaver.

just sayin.

I blend my own colors, using Sherwin Williams Universal Dyes. I begin by dying the wood yellow, not really necessary on yellow pine, but it evens the color.

I shoot a couple of coats of a clear sealer, sand, then put down the red shadow, I'll follow up after allowing it to dry a day, with the black brown...when it looks good, I'll do 'er with the clear. let it sit a month then wet sand, and polish... aint nuthin' to it.

I never really thought about doing a guide… I just squirt color ‘till it looks right….I never really cared for the “production” look some guitar manufacturer’s guitars have. So I give mine a more gradual gradient. I use a small automotive touch-up gun….

If someone will tell me how to post an acrobat .pdf I’ll do the schematic…

I didn’t photograph the project, I wasn’t sure how it was going to work out… century old wood is rather ugly, I’ll be doing another, so be kind when ya read all the . . . Ummm . . . the… .. Uhhhh… Ummmm when ya read the,. .. . Oh description… yeah, that’s it… when ya read the description….

Geez, Ron . . . .

You're sitting there fondling that beautiful guitar and I'm sitting on my arse correcting research papers! There's no justice in this world, I tell ya.

That's an absolutely stunning guitar! Who cares what it sounds like - who would even listen. Everyone will be drooling over the looks of the thing!

A big +1 on that. Ron, I really love seeing your work. It gives me inspiration. That is some beautiful wood, and some outstanding sunbursting. Great job. Thanks for posting.

I wish I could have seen neckid pictures of the wood. I love knots in pine.

1839 Tele

Ronkirn:

Great job Pal. You are very humble regarding your talents. That is one xtra beautiful Tele. I suppose that if we use the wood to date her she is a "1839 Telecaster" Wow!

Leave it to Terry to want to see necked pictures.

Thanks for letting us take a look and for the inspiration.

Thanks, Ron! I'd recently convinced myself that all I needed was one of your basic Teles and now you post this! 1839 barn wood. Makes you wonder, what did the old farmer hang from those cut nails put in the beam? CF Martin was 6 years old (the company). Anyway, I have one more guitar to sell to liquidate the funds for a Kirn. Be contacting you soon.
