8 Years Ago Today (May 2, 1999) -- Darkness, then not. ROLL CALL!!

Eight years ago today when I went to the (then) TDP website all that was there was a closed sign and a short statement about some of the reasons. Like most other posters here at that time I was dumbfounded. I was hurt, lost and mostly wandering around the internet trying to find my friends.

By the end of that day I had decided to start the TDPRI and did so the very next morning.

I had no idea what I would be getting into when I started down that path. I do remember I discussed it with my wife and she said, "You want to take our money and do what?" I told her it would only cost a couple hundred dollars and not take a lot of time. HA! Of course, today it costs much more than that per month and time? Probably 20 hours a week. It's like the part-time job you love (and sometimes hate) that you don't get paid for.

Anyway. Tomorrow, May 3rd is our 8th Anniversary. I want to thank everyone for their support, kindness, and help over the 8 years.

I especially want to thank the folks that are kind enough to periodically click on the "Make a Donation" button to help me pay the bills and keep the TDPRI going. You'll never know how much that helps when I go to my wife and say, "Honey, we need a bigger server (or more memory or to renew our software license) for the TDPRI."

So, HAPPY 8th B-DAY TDPRI and thanks to everyone here for their support and participation! If you where here back then... post your name in the ROLL CALL.

Paul Green
PS. If you'd like to support the TDPRI on our 8th Birthday you'll find the button on the top of every page

I've told the story elsewhere, but I was there on that TERRIBLE day when the TDP disappeared. I had actually emailed Noam about the possibility of taking over the job myself. (Ack!)

I CANNOT BEGIN TO TELL YOU HOW GRATEFUL I AM EVERY SINGLE DAY THAT PAUL TOOK IT ON HIMSELF. And that he somehow made the TDP "magically" reappear a couple of days later.

THANK YOU, PAUL!!! Life (and the Telecaster world) would NOT be the same without you. We are all forever in your debt. (And please, thank your wife for sticking with someone as obviously loony as you are... -LOL-)

Your biggest fan,
Chris S. :-)

AS soon as I get a few bucks from selling a neck, body and pups, I'll be making a donation to the TDPRI.

And thanks Paul for keeping this place alive. It means so much to all of us.

I just clicked, and now I want to thank you once again, Paul! I'm pretty sure I joined up the first month of the TDPRI, I know I was here for lots of the growing pains (probably helped cause a few!), and after eight years, I stll check in pretty much every day, and I've made a significant number of good friends through being a member here.

You've enriched my life!

Next time I'm in Texas, lunch is on me!

Cheers, Tim

I was around then, had joined the old TDP well before that, as I recall it wasn't too long after I had joined that some of the members surprised Noam with a 52 RI for his work.

I'm certainly glad that Paul shouldered the load and kept it going--many thanks!!! I don't know just how long Noam had run it but I'm sure that Paul has well eclipsed that by now in terms of time AND effort.

I was here then and at the original TDP before that for around 2 years or however long Noam ran it before Paul took over. My 1st day here was 2 weeks after Noam started the TDP there was only a handfull of users back then.

I remember back then, too.

I got hooked on the TDP in the fall of '98, and just got more and more addicted as the months went on.

As internet access (at least for me) was a rare thing back then, I had to wait until every evening to get my TDP jones on.

I think that, at least at a few points, my marriage was in jeopardy, as I was sometimes on the computer from after dinner to about 2 a.m...

And then that fateful day in May of '99. I think I actually knocked off work a little early to get home and get my TDP fix flowing...

...My response was like getting kicked in the teeth. I felt lost...confused...what was I to do? A whole internet at my fingertips, but there was only one site that I wanted access to...

...But I kept coming back and checking, hoping that by some miracle that this terrible thing that had happened would be undone...

...And along came Mr. Paul Green. He was like a Coast Guard officer pulling me out of merciless waters.

But more than allowing me to keep up my Tele fix, Paul allowed me to stay in contact with the best virtual community that anyone could ever be a part of. And I really, really mean that.

I remember the day well, and all the abuse poor Paul took initially from those who thought his way of running the website was not, shall we say, “historically accurate”. Don’t know how you’ve managed to keep your sanity all these years and miles, Paul, but very glad you have! As I’ve stated once or twice before, the TDP/TDPRI is responsible for my finding and falling in love with the Telecaster after spending more than 30 years focused on “the dark side”, greatly expanding my musical horizons, and most importantly, finding an incomparable group of fellow musicians and great friends who I get to hang with whenever Mike Rice (and Inertian) take it upon themselves to open their homes and their hearts to the crew I now refer to as the TDPRI Hudson Valley Jammers.

P.S. – Yes, I’ll hit that Make A Donation Button too.

How about this for a blast from the past? I saved this post on how to bend the screws on your saddles for intonation way back in 1998:

Quote:
In Reply to: Bridge Intonation Questions posted by Nathan Burch on June 03, 1998 at 11:47:07:

: Hello All,

: When bending the intonation screws on a three saddle tele bridge, where is the best place to put the bend? As close to the saddle as possible?

: Also, what is the best tool for the job? Can you just grab the screw with a pair of needle nose pliers and give it a twist?

: Finally, I can't afford a real strobe tuner, and was wondering which hand held was best for bridge intonating. I have heard the Boss TU12 and TU12H are good. Is the TU12 more accurate than the TU12H for guitar?

: Thanks for any info you can give me!

: Nathan

Nathan,

I use needlenose as you suggested. Try to adjust the barrel as closely as is possible first (ie one string a little sharp, the other a little flat) then bend right in the middle soas to create an equal adjustment to both strings. Go REAL slow, very little adjustment is the norm in my experience.
The Hey Fuzzy, show 'em your pictures.........,
KEN

Nathan, this is where I put the bend.

Yes, I'd been reading the TDP for quite a while and then one day I went to log on, and there was no "there" there. It was kind of like heading over to your favorite guitar shop and finding a big hole in the ground.

How long was it between the time the TDP closed and the TDPRI opened?

I thought it was kind of a while. Maybe what happened is that I assumed the TDP was gone for good and didn't find the replacement until 2-3 months later.

Oh well, thanks for all the good work. Heck, thanks even for the bad work! And especially for the dirty work (throwing out the trollers, restoring the system from hackers, keeping an eye out for spammers, and dealing fairly with us when our brains went south and we posted something over the line).

Happy Birthday TDPri....and mucho thanks, Paul!

I've never been a big poster here, but have been around pretty much since Noam started his version......it certainly was a shock and then relief when the TDP disappeared, then Paul swooped in to save the day.

Great site......I'm always glad it's here.
