HW1 texas tele into a 50's esquire project. (tech-heads please read newest post)
so i picked up a texas tele earlier today. i wasn't really planning on it, but when i picked it up i almost tossed it across GC cause it was so unexpectedly light. only had to play it for about a minute to know it was a keeper. i'm planning on turning it into an esquire.
hopefully without sounding like a total cork-sniffer, does anyone know if any of the earliest sunburst teles/esquires in the 50's came with blackguards? i want my esquire to be historically accurate, but i think a blackguard might look really cool. i've only seen whiteguards, but i thought i'd make sure before i order... also, weren't the early white fender parts bakelite? can i order a bakelite white esquire guard anywhere? also, if anyone has links to a place where i can learn to wire up an esquire (like what caps to use for true vintage, etc...) that'd be great!

Blackguards on sunbursts look sublime, way cooler than whiteguards, IMO...go for it.

i think mine weighs about 7.5 lbs. which i thought was incredibly light. i just got an email from an online dealer whose texas weighs 6 lbs. even! do people actually want teles that light? seems like you wouldn't even be able to feel it.

Tx tele w Blackguard
I did it.
Look here: http://www.tdpri.com/forum/telecaste...dy-thanks.html The standard '52 guards need a little work, near the edge of the neckpocket. And mind the lacquer, it will chip off easily when sanding the edges |

You'll get many opinions on that question if you search the forum. But, a film cap in the 10-20% tolerance range will be fine. Even if there were some subtle audio differences, it could be so subjective as to what is actually the better sounding to each individual.
