Andy Summers & The Police

I am going to see the Police this summer in St. Louis, and i cannot wait to see Andy Summers play. Has anyone seen him live? And if so, am I in for a treat?

I love Andy Summer' music, and I also love Sting - so I am looking forward to this more than just about any concert I've ever attended.

Big 80s

I saw the Police about half a dozen times in the 80s. And Sting about that many times since.

'Twas great . . . every time.

After the shows, I'd stand around the stage and beg Sting's roady, Danny Quattroci, for something from Sting. All I ever got was a broken Stewart Copeland drum stick. (Still got it, though.)

It was both Sting and Andy Summers who turned me on to playing and in my high school garage band days, we played a lot of Police tunes (even though the drummer loved Journey, the guitar player wished he were Eddie Van Halen, and I couldn't quite manage to play Sting's bass parts while also sing the songs).

I'm sure the shows will be fantastic, but I doubt I'll catch them on their geriatric tour.

If they make a new album, then I'll be more interested.

Andy Summers

I saw The Police twice here in Vancouver in the eighties, but recently in Feb. I met Andy & Stewart in a local Starbucks(no sign of Gordon, gee, I wonder why?)They've been here on and off for several months rehearsing for the Grammy's and their upcoming tour which they are starting here on May 28th and 30th. The three of them have been sighted numerous times around the city. They wouldn't fess up to a new album, but they kinda looked at each other in a funny way? They did however say there would be a concert DVD in glorious 5.1. I have a collection of about 20 concert DVD's, so I'm thrilled.(Syncronicity Tour, Sting's Brand New Day Tour and Bring on the Night DVD's) Andy bought his '61 beater Tele from a student of his for $250.00!!!, it's still his fave and Fender is about to launch a pretty much exact replica, signature model complete with mods and HB. Go to the show, you'll be ecstatic, the sound is usually perfect, which is no surprise considering they're such perfectionists. JJ.

I saw them in Montreal in 1983 with the then "unknown" SRV has one of the opening acts. You will not be disappointed. Has far as I am concerned that band in a live situation is all about Copeland! Watch him and you will be amazed.

I was born in '83 so I was late missing them in their prime. I have grown up listening to them though. When my parents got our first CD player back in the early 90's i remember going to Best Buy and my Dad buying our first CD - The Police Greatest Hits... I didn't like them at first when my dad listened to them, but when I became a teenager and started listening to punk I started exploring early punk bands like the clash and for the first time realized that The Police were definitely in the punk scene though their music was a bit more sophisticated. Andy, Stewart, and Gordon are definitely more talented than most punk groups, so they stood out I am assuming. However, when they announced a new tour, I jumped on the best tickets I could afford. I don't go to concerts often, but I couldnt miss this chance. My wife will be 8 months pregnant when we go. Hopefully, Stewarts beats don't send her into early labor.

Absolutely !, if you can play it with some weird extension and still make it fit, he'll do it, i can only think each finger is about 9" long !
Some of those 'inside' 9th chords just sound sooooooo cool, add a bit of delay/chorus and you are flying !

Andy's signature chords

Here's one to get you started: 5th fret thumb on 6th string, barr 1,2,3,4(same fret),5th open. Then 2nd fret same. Presto! A little chorus, delay and some Bob Marley motivator and your "in like Flint". JJ.

I saw Andy Summers with Eric Burden and the Animals (great band).

The other guitarist, John Weider, was also very good.

I've always heard the expression used as "In Like Flynn", but I guess some use "In Like Flint", a play on "In Like Flynn" from a 60's movie.

Origin of In Like Flynn

Hey, just call it a 2 and it doesn't seem like it's as much of a stretch

......thanks Guitar Jonz.....good call, yeah I knew about the Flynn/Flint thing, guess I was trying to be "too hip for the room". Read the last paragraph of your link. 1967 James Coburn,(James Bond spoof) "In Like Flint", sequel to "Our Man Flint"(1966) Wikipedia.com. Coburn appears on the cover of "Band on the Run" P.Mc., in character, as Paul was also a big fan of the movies, which was my musical reference......thanks again....JJ

Those were the days!

The Police were definitely a big part of my high school soundtrack. I spent many hours listening to them through the honkin' Jensen co-axial speakers I mounted in the well of my VW bug (the plywood covered with shag carpet, of course!) Saw them from the front row for free in 1979 on the lawn at the University of Florida. Four years later I saw them from the nose-bleed seats in a huge coliseum. Good times.
