I can see a whole new bunch of super heroes being created. . . where a group of guitarists are happy playin’ at the local honky tonk on Saturday night, when… Space aliens abduct ‘em… The poor guys are taken to the Aliens space ship… strangely looking like a ’51 Fender Deluxe with wings…and subjected to a burst of radiation from Scottyonium and returned to earth all playing like Scotty.

They become advocates for good by confronting evil wherever it rears it’s evil head by setting up and playing “Sweet Georgia Brown” with such a remarkable display of talent that the vicious perpetrators are stunned into frozen immobility… and while standing there watching, dumfounded, the local authorities are able to round ‘em up.

Chalk up another one for Truth, Justice and Arpeggios that are simply unbelievable, and the Scotty-X-Men.

Most of us would probably have a much easier time improving than Scotty Anderson would. I kind of feel sorry for the guy.

Hey anybody can get real good by practising. That's easy. I'm doing it the hard way folks. Show me a little respect.

I'll bet he got that good by spending most of his time worrying about whether the pickguard was vintage correct, if his pickups should be vintage or 10% overwound, if the body should be 7 or 7.3 lbs to be vintage. You know the important stuff that practising would only distract you from.

I feel so embarrased for him.

He must be completly unaware of what we all know. Maybe they don't have good music stores where he lives. Perhaps we could offer him some advice and steer him right. I mean he could use the help. I think he means well.

I forgot about the youtube video with him playing through a Kustom amp.

The first band I was in, the other guitar player (who was clearly better than me) used a little 30watt SS tuck & roll Kustom combo, that he plugged into an Ampeg 4x12. Sounded pretty good too. I put a 1/4" jack in a prescription bottle so he could hook up his 4x12". He had a Bassman head sitting there (first one I ever saw) that didn't work. I never heard him play through a tube amp.

Took me a while to figure out how to get to my uploaded photos!

This is actually his LPB-1! He asked me to fix it, but I didn't know how, so he said to keep it. By now, I know it's just something wrong with the switch.

Scotty(my hero)Anderson

....Scotty has been seen with bits of paper stuffed in the nut(remember that!) to get rid of buzz! Yeah, he's very down to earth. The videos of him and Bill Paxton are my faves, Sweet Georgia Brown, etc.I admire Scotty particularly cause he doesn't use any picks whatsoever as I often do. That thumb playing bass and the other four "picks", read alternating nails and finger meat opens up a lot of fingerstyle doors, try it sometime.....JJ

I leave these mistakes in to show everybody else and to remind me, no matter how sure you are, you can always be wrong! JJ

At the end of that YouTube clip I can't help but wonder what that guy with the Strat is thinking. He looks a little uncomfortable to me. I know I'd be thinking things like "what the f*** am I doing here" and "if I just keep smiling and back away slowly maybe they won't even notice I'm gone" or "how quickly can I learn to play bass"?.

I am almost 90% positive he uses a thumb pick in a number of his videos.

Yeah. He definitely uses a thumb pick. You can see it for sure and as well when he plays some fast single note lines you can see he's using the thumbpick like a flat pick ie.) using his forefinger against his thumb as you would a flatpick. According to me at least.

.....see above or any you tube offering, Ive never seen him use a pick of any kind. I've had people bet me.....and lose, saying he's holding a flatpick on leads but if you look real close, before and after the "flatpick lead" segments you'll see he pinches his index finger with his thumb, just like us duffers hold a pick and uses the index nail as a pick, I do the same....trust me.....or not! If anyone has a video showing Scotty using a pick, I'll graciously stand corrected.......JJ

If you Google 'scotty anderson technique thumbpick' it appears the whole world believes he uses a thumbpick. I'm going to have to review some vids. In the meantime I've emailed him. Get it from the horses mouth I figure. I would like to know for sure. For me the jury's still out.

....I know all about the general consensus(like I said, I've made a few bucks on this).....won't go there....the world was flat too....next you'll be telling me Jeff Beck uses picks Please PM me if you find "anything" definitive....remember we're here to learn and I have been corrected many times and take it graciously! I'm not Scotty, but he is a very good friend. He is the most humble genius. I produced the live event for him in Macon and host his website. I wish you all could know him personally. There is zero ego and he has the best sense of humor. He has no computer knowledge! At all! He appreciates every comment that I forward to him, if his lovely wife Judy, can get him to come to the computer to see it. He uses one of the Fred Kelly thumbpicks and cuts it down. It's hard to see in the vids, but he will hold it like a flatpick some of the time and then play fingerstlyle in a split second and it's seamless. I've seen him countless times. I've yet to figure it out. Same goes with his double and triple stops. It's insane. We are going in the studio in May and I hope to find a rhythm player for him so we can record a few duos. Seems everyone is a bit hesitant.

Thanks Nate.
I know I was only guessing but just by the right hand placement and movement it looked to me like he was using a thumbpick. A classical technique would require a different angle to allow the thumbnail to be used if there was no thumbpick and by Scotty's tone it sounded like it wasn't just the flesh of the thumb being used.

And I wonder why people would be 'hesitant' to play with him?!!! Yikes!!!

I wish he was my friend too you lucky son of a gun.

.....thanks Nate, the "cut down" explains my mistake to me, are they flesh colored or clear or is it just the crappy videos I've watched over and over?
Cause I still haven't "seen" the pick! I'm gonna try that cutting down thing, cause the usual thumbpicks are useless to me, too big. I do use the index nail as a pick and that works for a lot of people.

For those keeping score
-Scotty Anderson- Thumbpick
-Jeff Beck- no picks
-Wes Montgomery- no picks
-Me- no picks(sometimes) JJ

Darndest thing. You still cant' see the pick, it's red, but you can see how he uses it, alternating between flatpick and fingerstyle.

Scotty Vid

....thanks again Nate...you "see" my problem, Scotty is my hero, my dad taught me on his Tele & Gretch at 10 with "his" style of jazz/country. He still plays me under the table at 79! Chet was a big influence, obviously, but Chet said many times Scotty does Chet better than Chet! JJ.

Thanks Nate3.4 for all these insight.

Could you talk to us about his guitars, amps, setup...
Maybe you could arrange somekind of live interview with Scotty (well just dreaming...)

Thanks,

No worries my friend. I wasn't completely convinced my observations were accurate. It was really nice of Nate3.4 to set the record straight.

That would be cool. I'd enjoy learning more about Scotty, his gear, how he acquired his super powers etc.

In the past Scotty played his old tele with a mini humbucker, plugged straight in a fender twin on about 3! Now he has switched to this new Kustom '72 Coupe Combo amp, and has their endorsement as well. Same old tele. I think he may use a chorus from time to time, but I'm not sure. I'll try to get him online with you guys. He would love it.

After watching Scotty play, I don't know whether I want to quit playing or start practicing. What a smokin' player!

I can't let another Scotty Anderson thread go without chiming in here.

Ever since first seeing his 1991 Hotlicks video, I've been amazed by his technique and phrasing. Open-string runs, double-stops, triple-stops, rockabilly - this guy can play anything! He seems to have a great appreciation and understanding of different musical styles, but I love it most when he plays Chet!

It takes a great player for me to be truly humbled, and Scotty has that by the truck load! I simply love his playing, and continue to be a huge fan of one of the greatest Tele pickers of All Time.

Thanks,
