wiring question

Ok guys... just bought a 62Ri tele....stock pups. Im not sure what size caps it has but they're in the proper respective places but im not diggin the sound i get when i roll the vol. control back off full... sound looses all its punch and sounds almost out of phase. I love the sound of my 50th anniversary am.std. But it only has a .22 cap from the tone to vol. and thats it.. theres not a cap between the 2nd and 3rd pins on the vol control like there is on the 62RI... can someone explain the difference between the two setups and do you think that if i jerked both caps out of the 62RI and placed a .22 in the same fashion as the amstd. that this would remedy my prob? They're both runnin 250k pots

thanks in advance

twang' on,
jerry

The cap on the two lugs of the volume pot is a treble bleed cap, which is supposed to allow more highs to pass through as you lower the volume. This is a 62 reissue? That cap didn't appear stock in Teles until the late 60s, if I recall correctly. One thing you might do is remove that cap, and see if it fixes some or all of the problem. To my ears, Fender has always used too large a value for that cap. With the stock Fender value, I always hear an apparent increase in trebles as the volume is rolled off. That might be what you are referring to as an almost out of phase sound.

The period correct tone cap value is .05uF (or .047uF which is the closest thing). If the guitar still sounds too dark after getting rid of the treble bypass cap, you can substitute a .022uF, or even a .01uF cap for the tone cap.

Both volume and tone controls should be 250K.

I replaced a bridge pickup in my '71 and....

although I wired it the same as the stock pickup, it was out of phase. Somewhere along the way, wire colors changed, so if it's used, and somebody replaced a pickup,
it could be out of phase.
