I see where this is headed now....you're all enablers
Today is the 2nd anniversary of my Tele.
Just 2 weeks ago today I stumbled onto a brand new black MIM Std for $300 because Sam Ash ordered too many in that color. A practically even swap for a Tak a/e 12 string netted me my first Telecaster. Black would have been my last choice, especially with that plain vanilla pickguard, but hey, the price was right. Day 1....picked up a gloss black 3 ply and dumped that white guard pronto. Used black screws too. Bought a set of Pro-line domed knobs in black. Tele now a Darthcaster. Day 3....Darthcaster got real old, real quick. Black guard off, white pearl on. Bye bye black knobs. Much nicer. Day 8....sale at a local store...aftermarket "more-red-than-brown" tortoise guard for $12.....hummm, might look good on black. It does. Pearl guard retired to the box of extra parts. Day 13...after a string of newbie bridge questions, I bought an All-Parts 3 saddle vintage bridge. Day 15, today....installed said bridge. So easy a caveman can do it. Just appearance-wise it looks cleaner and and has the look of a more expensive guitar. So what do I do?.....pickguard change, naturally. That plain Jane original white 3 ply gets 3 coats of flat black automotive primer, and the beveled edges sanded to reveal a nice triple w/b/w stripe around the perimeter. The extreme flat black actually contrasts well with the high gloss of the black Mex body. The tortoise guard joins its white pearl cousin in the parts bin, as does the original saddle. The new saddle and flat black on gloss black really give it a gorgeous look. A fresh set of Fender 250 10's, and I fire up the engine. Now, bear in mind I'm a hacker and poser, but that new vintage bridge sure seems to give the Mex a set of balls...it seems louder and meatier. So far I like the neck, but the heavy weight of the Alder body will start to bug me...I'm planning on swapping bodies, something in the $150 range, this time next year. And it's all your fault. When does this ever end? Tom |

We're here to help, not hinder.
With that in mind, it was this board that made me sell my soul to all things twang. I have Glendale and Durham in my cell on speed dial. You might want to add a Musikraft neck to that box o' parts build. Dave |

Back to the pickup fault... For a month my automobile was drawn to the 3 stores with good selection in my metro area and it was not to the acoustics, so it had to be the iron in the vehicle being attracted to the magnets in the pickups. One must have had superior magnets because I kept coming back to it. To my surprise it (Highway One) played and sounded better than models costing even more. As far as it's look, I don't think it could be more plain, but it played better than two sunburst and one in wine. The plain honey blonde is actually growing on me a lot though. Really no regrets in any way the more I play it. It's more versatile than I expected in terms of sound. I suppose it would be fun to do some modifications, but I'm having a lot more fun just playing and taking my playing to a higher level. Have fun with your new Tele! |

Tom,
Welcome to the darkside (of telecasters)! There aint no turning back. I was a strat guy before I got my first tele. (My friends all told me that a strat was the most versatile instrument I could find). I loved that strat, it was a 3 tone sunburst rosewood fretboard standard strat (made in japan). I then "discovered" the Tele... I still wonder what happend to that strat... If anyone see a strat runnin around give me a shout. Welcome aboard :)

Hahaha... that's the way it should be. It's so easy to mod a Tele that it's even fun.
I began to change a few things on my Strat, and it's so much pain to deal with the pickguard every time that I even have a mod that I never completed on it because of that. With the 4 Teles I'll have available to play with when my 4rth one is completed, I should be able to always have one ready to mod while still have at least one to play Gilles
