The king of twang...BRAD PAISLEY...Crook and Dr. Z fired, throaty, girt, sparkle and a punchy as hell...

I'm also big on Vince Gill, Redd Volkaert and Robben Ford's tele tones...

Steve Cropper on the Astors' "Daddy Didn't Tell Me" (The Complete Stax/Volt Singles" vol. 8); Booker T. & The MG's "Jingle Bells" (ibid. vol. 6) or Arthur Conley's "I'm A Lonely Stranger" (Sweet Soul Music). Upon reflection, I probably prefer to hear him through 6L6's and the combined position, although "Jingle Bells" kinda sounds like the Harvard and the bridge.

Vince Gill, Brent Mason, Redd Volkaert, Brad Paisley...

Hard to pick one... each of them pulls a unique, pure-Tele tone out of their plank. I like 'em all.

I've been listening to an Austin City Limits featuring the Flatlanders for a couple of years now. The Tele guy was Rob Gjersoe. Don't know much else about him, but to me this is a a prime example of a guy having a pretty good night making it happen with classic honky tonk tone. They got him pretty high in the mix, so you don't miss anything. Would like to know more about him. pete

When I lived in Tacoma Washington in the '70's and '80's, Nokie Edwards was The Man. His Tele had the fattest tone, delivered by a custom Red Rhodes single bar pickup in the lead position. You may have seen the guitar on the cover of a '77 or '78 issue of Guitar Player magazine. He told me a couple of years ago that he sold it, so someone out there has a really great Tele!

Great choices. I'd add Billy Gibbons for both his tone and style.

Three of the guys who really stick out to me are:

James Burton - Everything Brad Paisley and company do today on Telecasters was pretty much done already by this original Tele-master. IMO Burton created the foundation on which the famed Tele "tone" was eventually built. Today, a half century since his first recordings with Rick Nelson, his amazing tone is as spectacular sounding as they were back in '57.

Don Rich and Luther Perkins - What can you say about these two guys that hasn't been said? Possibly two of the most famous country pickers of all-time with two entirely different sounds and styles who exhibited some amazingly unique Tele/Esquire tones! Unlike todays country guitarists, you can easily identify Rich and Perkins picking in a matter of a few notes.

There are so many... Some of my favorite tonalities are from the dual Telecaster solo from the original "Hotel California". i believe that would be Don Felder and Joe Walsh. Can't believe no one mentioned Ray Flacke either. oh well too many players, too little time...

Vince Gill, Brad Paisley & Redd Volkaert have tone by the truck load.

I also like the tone Scotty Anderson gets outta his modified Tele.

Then there's Brent Mason, Bill Kirchen, Jerry Donahue, Danny G, Roy B - I like all these guys!

Thanks,

Robyn Hitchcock

Very under rated player (anyone who has Pete Buck as a rhythm guitarist has to be pretty good!) and the reason I bought my Tele a few years back

For just best tone its gotta be Vince Gill.

I have heard Vince play thousands of times and NEVER heard anything come out of any guitar he plays that has sounded bad.

"Hotel California" certainly has Joe Walsh on Telecaster, but I have a strong feeling that Don Felder playes a Les Paul. (This has been discussed before, and I'm sure that was the cinclusion). Great, great solo anyway.....
