I think you could get away without using a string tree if you used staggered tuners, like the ones on the Eric Johnson Strat. I'm pretty sure that Allparts has a set like that.
I'm not aware of any Telecasters that didn't have string trees though. I only put one on the E&B strings when I put parts Tele's together, because that's what they did in the '60s. |

The American Deluxe Telecaster has staggered tuners but the picture on the Fender website has a string tree.
The John 5 Telecasters don't have string trees .......... probably because he does behind the nut bends.

I put staggered tuners on my Squire 51, which has a tele style neck. The stagger just isn't quite enough angle for me, so I put on one round string tree.
