Opinions on this 54 headstock

I saw a lovely 54 tele today. Ver big, round neck, light as a feather, frets still feel great, resonant and loud pickups. I was troubled by some things on the headstock though, but just cause they don't look "normal" doesn't mean they're not right. So have a look and let me know what you think about the decal and the walnut truss cap. I've seen elongated caps like that on 54 strats. The decal in person looked very dark, with lots of black on the bottoms of the letters. And the word "TELECASTER" seemed large.

The decal certainly looks "off"...

And the walnut plug for the truss rod looks 'painted' on There is no sharp edge what so ever...

That logo does look funky. Some wear on the peghead but the logo looks new. The "walnut" plug is the darkest I've ever seen?????

The cap looks a lot like some 54 strats I've seen, but I never saw one on a tele. Here's a 54 strat - not mine - but I'm pretty sure it's all straight.

...Its snot the shape of that plug but rather the look of a Allen head truss rod adjustment filled wit wood and then painted over with sum glue leff hangin roun. Also yew seldom cee an early 50s with it that elongated. (I could be rong---jes an opinion)

...The decal looks like a replacement and the distance betwixt Fenner and TELECASTER looks less than an original. (could be jes the camera angle and again I could be rong).

Thanks Fuzzy, very helpful observations as usual. I should have taken pics of the body and neck for my files, I just didn't have enough time so only snapped the area that bugged me. Thanks again - Ralph

It looks like there is some sort of filler in there with a finish on top. Assuming that Strat is the real deal...the Tele looks just as "real" as the Strat.

Did the boys & girls in Fullerton ever dab anything on plugs that needed some fill? Then sand the thing smooth and shoot the finish?

I was actually amazed how similar it looked to the strat. That strat is owned by a long time collector, and I've seen one other 54 strat that had the exact same shape and color in that area, so I feel there's a strong possibility that this is real and a 1954-specific thing - but then again I have never seen it on a tele. The oddness of the decal makes the whole thing seem off. I didn't make an offer on the guitar, but I really liked it as a player.
