Squier '51...Couldn't resist

Well it started when I bought a squier '51 for the neck to use on my new tele project:

http://www.tdpri.com/forum/telecaste...ay-turser.html

Well, I started reading all the reviews on the S '51 and couldn't resist buying ANOTHER one. I figure if I don't like it I can just sell it on idiot bay.

It seems the blonde ones are sold out everywhere that has the $99 deal. So if you want a black or sunburst one I don't imagine they will last much longer. I'm very excited about the posibilities with these.

If you have pictures of your '51 please post them. or comments those too

I've been close to buying a squire '51 just because the $99 price tag, but I don't need one (at all).

I'm not saying I'm cured, but I believe I'm getting better, or maybe just a little more selective.

Every time I see that Ferden '51 it's like the very first time. Very cool.

Jwells, I'll never get tired of looking at that guitar. Do you have any more pics of it?

Oh no, you're not. If they were that cheap over here I probably would have bought a second one as well.
But in the Netherlands they're still like 150-170 euros...

I got the last local blonde one. Check out this way cool site...
http://www.usacustomguitars.com/virtualguitar.html

I 'built' a rosewood one with tortoise shell pg, slanted soapbar bridge, lipstick neck, and tinted neck.

This is a game I really like to play.

Here is the "before" photo.

It will have to warm up a little before I can shoot the "after" picture.

If you know what I mean.

While I am at it, I am going to try to make MOST of that pickguard go away.

BTW...I drug that guitar to a job last week. Nobody even knew when I switched over to it. So...either it sounds pretty good, or the Martycaster sounds pretty bad.

Or something like that.

For those of you who've worked on your Squiers 51's...is it true that the fingerboard marker dots are silkscreened on there and not actual plastic dots?

Just wondering if they're going to wear off, as the neck finish seems pretty thin.

Stuco...that's the way it came out of the box. Still has the pickguard condom on it.

As soon as we get a streak of days above freezing the plan is to change it to KRYLON #3553 Watermelon...or '56 Buick Tahiti Coral (if I can find some in a rattle can that doesn't break the budget...not much of a budget on this guitar...odd as it may seem)

Jack, yessiritis. #3533 it is. (Notice the change in the number.) The cap looks just like the inside of a nice ripe melon...might have to airbrush in some seeds. (That is a joke, just a joke.)

I really like this Tahiti Coral

There are places that will mix it in a rattle can, but always at budget-buster prices.

I've been tempted many times - would like a blonde one with black guard. But I keep resisting, because ultimately isn't it just a hardtail Strat with a Tele neck and a huge pickguard? Say "yes" because that will make me feel better about not having one! :)

Umm, sorry ... no. Swap the bridge bumhucker for a P94 and it's far closer to a Tele than ya think. Or use a Strat Bezel and stick in a Rio Muy Grande and you've HAVE a TELE ...

Um, no.
I've got a nice Strat and a couple of nice Teles and the 51 is really a different animal. The stock bridge humbucker gives a unique tone--edgy and in your face--and mine has a GFS lipstick in the neck for a jangly roots rock tone that you can't get from a Tele or a Strat.
Maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't but the 51 is not just a me-too guitar.

My dad got me the blonde w/ black guard for my 30th birthday a couple weeks ago. I haven't modded it yet as I'm working on a nashville tele. I actually like it stock (I know, the blasphemy).

It made a believer out of my dad though. He's a vintage Fender bass man. I sent him some links to the '51's on MF and he made fun of me a bit for GASing over a Squire. He surprised me with it for my birthday and revealed that he picked it up when it arrived and was very impressed. Now he's GASing for a '51 RI P Bass to match my Squire. He probably bought a S'51 to stash in his closet and play when nobody's home.

So basically what distinguishes the Squier '51 for you guys is the pickups then?

i had seen the 51's before, but shyed away simply because of the squire tag...but it could be a fun mess around 'lectric. i had thought about buying a pawn shop $99 special and gutting it before respraying with something cool, but that oculd be easily just as fun...

curious to see how yours comes out, bucko...

That is a great color! A black pickguard would give it that "seedy" vibe. I just might use that color myself.

Hmmm... I got a SB '51, and I like it a lot; however, nowadays I play the Tele copy mostly.
Now I got the chance to swap it for a Silvertone 1448 without the case-amp (the kind Beck plays on currently).
I am very tempted to do so... do you guys think that's a good deal?

I love these things. I just ordered a Sunburst from MF and it should be here tomorrow. I got the last local, black '51 at guitar center at the end of November for $79! Haven't seen another one since. I had plans for this one. GFS Lil' Killer "vintage" in the neck and GFS Vintage 59 in the bridge. Installed a Gibson 3-way toggle switch. This is my main guitar and it rocks and was my first ever project.

upgraded pups, tuners, plus gibson-style swith and tone control added(looks like mistermullens' except with another knob between). Thinking of refinishing, and adding the tdpri partscaster decal (hopefully coming out?) and photos eventually.

Hi Roadman (waves from Langley). Dang right they're sold out of Vintage Blondes here. I just got the last one from L&M last week. They DO have 2 blacks and a burst still though.

So. I got myself the Silvertone, and guess what? We didn't turn out to get together well.

So I swapped it for a blonde Squier '51 plus an old Aria f-hole jazzer. In the end, still a pretty good deal...
