I re-shot my Tele photos

The photos I took a few years ago when I got my Tele were just not that good, so I re-shot them today.

enjoy!

Very nice as usual. How much time did you spend polishing that thing?

Wow!

That is clean and shiny. Great photos.

But just to rain on your parade a LITTLE, there are a couple of pickguard screws that don't have their slots going in the same direction.

Mighty fine, might fine!

Is that tele so bad you never play it, or so sweet you play it with silk gloves?
Whatever you do, it feels brand new and you are the only one admitted to borrow one of my guitars.
Great photos! Please tell us a little about the lightings and backgrounds you use.

I keep my guitars pretty clean, so I only spent about 15 minutes on it.

That was a limited edition Cherry Sunburst Strat with a Flame Maple Top. One of the coolest looking guitars I ever owned.. unfortunately, that maple top made it way too bright sounding, no matter what pickups I put in it. So it is long gone now...

This is actually my #1 guitar. I play it a lot. It is made out of a bunch of different parts that friends gave me. Best playing and sounding guitar I've played, and if you look at my gallery, I've played a LOT of t them.

I just got the black background. It is a piece of black velvet. I then have natural light coming from the left side, and I reflect it back from the right with a big, white foam core board. I use a tripod and time expose every shot. I also have a compressor and I blow the guitars and backgrounds off with almost every shot.

Not to be deceitful, but I do use photoshop to adjust the contrast and to take out minor dust. Compared to some, I do very little to them.

Here are two examples. The first one is the finished product.

Now here is the un-touched photo. All I did was take the raw photo and changed the resolution for easy comparison. You can see the dust specks that have not yet been removed. And the photo is a bit dark overall.

I don't want to deceive anyone, I'd still say about 98% of what you see is the real deal. I'm from the old school, where you try to get the elements right when you take the photo, not after.

Yes, the G is close to the screw, but I've never broken a sting on this guitar. This is where I had to place them to get the string spacing correct.

I've considered changing the bridge for a Wilkinson compensating sloped saddle bridge, but with this guitar, it plays and sound so good, I'm afraid of changing anything on it, in fear that I change the formula and change the sound.

It came with the neck. The neck came from a Hwy1 Tele. A friend sold it to me with the nut, the string tree and the tuners for $130.00. I only had to put in about $175.00 to complete the guitar.

Awesome photography!!! Very nice guitar too. So, can you tell us more about this source of "Natural light"?

I understand the tripod and long shutter speeds.

The light source is key. Was this a digital camera or film?

Great work.

I've been shooting all digital for at least three years. I don't have a film camera anymore. I used to use an Olympus OM1n and a Mamiya 645.

As far as the light source, I have a large window in that room. I think the real key is that the window has shades on it, and I dial them so I don't have direct sunlight coming in. It's subdued by the blinds, giving a softer light.

The 645 was a fun camera. But mine has been a paper weight for the past few years, I guess I should let go of it.

A+ photos again Mark, thanks.

Would you mind telling us what sort of digital? Does it have a fixed lens or can you switch out the lenses, and if so then which lens did you use to shoot these lovely pics? Thanks!

But you have opened my eyes and i see now all the scum and dust on my guitars and i have to add a compressor on my buy list grrr...

I remember reading recently that he's using a Fuji S5200 (non-interchangeable zoom).

The thing that I liked about the 645 was the prism finder and the rectangular format. I wanted an SLR type camera at the time, and the only other cameras in that price range in the early 80's were the C220's and the C330's. Yashicamat also had a nice twin lens reflex also, but again, I wanted an SLR type.

And the format was nice because you got 30 photos with a roll of 220. I was shooting weddings in those days, and that was important to me.

I used to use those cans of compressed air to blow guitars off with, but with as much air as I need to do it right, I'd go through a can a shoot, and with as many guitars as I shoot, that's gets very expensive.

also, those cans of compressed air freeze up and the air flow gets really low when that happens. Just not a good solution at all for me.

Thanks for all your encouragement. I'm going to submit a few for next years TDPRI calendar. I have to dedicate most to my own publications, but I have so many good ones, I know I'll have a few that can be submitted.
