Roadtrip to Austin!!!!!

Flying to Austin Wednesday for the Austin City Limits Festival...anyone (of y'all)gonna be there? Going to see Gary Clark Jr. at The Continental happy hour 6:30p Wednesday, then down to The Broken Spoke to see Heybale featuring REDD VOLKAERT from 9:30p-1:00a!!!
Thursday is pretty open....prolly go to Barton Springs and chill (pun intended). Friday the Festival starts and goes to about 9:30-10:00, then it's off to Club 21 in Uhland,Tx to see the DERAILERS! Saturday-Festival, Sunday-Festival, Sunday night The Continental for Heybale featuring REDD VOLKAERT again. Monday-collapse from exhaustion, Monday afternoon fly home to Joisey! So if any of you fellow TDPRI'ers are gonna be around or have any suggestions, please let me know! See you there!

You're gonna love Austin!

Yeah, Austin's a happenin' place. Make sure you check out Threadgill's. Dale Watson used to have a steady night there and his band cooks. The Continental is a must, as is the Broken Spoke. If you're lucky, you might be able to catch Marcia Ball--if she's not on the road. I'm not sure where she's usually playing, but if you get the chance... If your looking for some good Mexican food, skip the yuppy joints in Central Austin and head across the highway for the authentic stuff. Make sure you get a little brisket at Stubb's though--I could eat that bbq all day.

Hate to tell you

I hate to tell you... but you're only scratching the surface! The Gourds are playing at Gruene Hall (Texas' Oldest Dance Hall) on Friday night about 45 min south of Austin in Gruene, TX (pronounced Green.)

Then on Saturday night it's Pinmonkey at Gruene Hall.

Both great groups.

Plus the Mavericks are playing Sat night at midnight at the Continental Club. Their lead singer is Raul Malo and he's fantastic. He went out on his own last year with a successful solo CD and the word was the Mavericks were through, but they're back together and putting out a new album.

Luckily for you, I can't get the music listings at the Austin Chronicle's website up at the moment, or you'd be buried in good music choices for sure.

Good Luck, have fun and eat BBQ at Poke Joe's on 5th Street!

Thanks Paul and Supertonk

I forgot about the Mavericks Saturday night...I'll definitely catch them too! You know it's funny, but when I read your Subject "Hate to tell you", I thought I was gonna get a web-whoopin'! Glad you reminded me about The Mavericks...they're playing the Festival too! Supertonk....what places...not Chuy's?
Last year my girlfriend and I caught the Derailers at the Festival and we are the first two in the left corner of the pic (she's got the Stetson on) http://www.musictexas.com/rojo_capit...tday/crowd.jpg I think I was changing film....

Thursday in Austin

On Thursday the 18th I would suggest:

James Hand at the Saxon Pub Happy Hour from 5:00 to 7:00. Pete Mitchell is usually on Tele w/ Herb Steiner on steel. Everyone needs to experience James Hand.

Karen Poston and the Crystal Pistols at the Carousel Lounge Happy Hour, 7:00 to 9:00 Andrew Nafziger on Lefty Tele and Boby Snell on Steel

Cornell Hurd at Jovita's from 8:00 to 10:00 Paul Skelton on Tele and Scott Walls on steel

Chaparral at the Broken Spoke 9:00 to 12:00

James Hand is also at Ginny's Little Longhorn from 9:00 to 1:00

Dallas Wayne at Ego's with Redd Volkaert and Tommy Detamore on steel 11:00 to 2:00 (I'll be here I'm pretty sure)

Jim Stringer and the AM Band at the Carousel Lounge 10:00 to 12:00 Jim Stringer on Tele (ASAT actually)

I'll be at Maggie Mae's on steel with a new band called Hillbilly Zen 10:00 to 11:00

Here's a good site for what's going on, it should be updated by Wednesday or Thursday:

I'm gonna be at Jovita's thursday meeting some folks from another board... try to find us and say HI if you come by...

The Mavericks have a slot at the ACL festival, so you may not have to try to stay up to see 'em...

Grab a Chronicle when you can on Thursday and see what you can find... Dale Watson, Chapparal, the Carosel Lounge, etc are all great choices... and James Hand is a GREAT old-school tears-in-your-beer honky tonker... but the Cornell Hurd Band (Jovita's) is a South Austin Legend...

That looks GREAT!!!

The last time I was in San Antonio, this past spring, I bought a book called, "Dance Halls and Last Calls" by Geronimo Trevino III. It details the history of all the dance halls in Texas. Great old ones that are gone, and the history of the remaining old dance halls. This is something really special about the Texas Hill Country. I learned a TON.

Saengerhalle is in the book and like most of the dance halls, it was built by German immigrants. It was the local "singing hall" or "Saenger Halle" in German. Almost every little burg had a singing hall, or a shooting club or the like. I lived there for 20 years and saw all these places but had no idea of their history. It was a facinating read for me.

Man, with all that great music in one 4 day period there just aren't enough hours in the day.

Good Luck
Paul Green

Don't forget Don Walser !

Don't forget Don Walser! An Austin roadhouse music discussion wouldn't be complete without him. He's a Texas treasure for sure. I don't know if Don's working this weekend or not, but if so, don't miss him.

If you haven't heard Walser, you can find him featured on Asleep at the Wheel's Bob Wills tribute #2 (Ride with Bob) on the third track "I ain't Got Nobody".

Cheers!
Matt

Thanks Matt!

I'm here in Austin, now and it's muuuuuuggy...talk about humidity!!!!! Can't wait to hit the springs! I brought my laptop and have taken advantage of the "local calls are free" from my hotel room. Don't want to abuse their generosity, so, gotta go. Thanks again! Off to the Continental, then the Broken Spoke later to see Redd!
