I don't know much about Valley Arts Guitars but I believe that FMIC now owns them. They may be able to give you some info.

Had a REALLY nice 84 Breezysound (still have the neck-on the Tele below) and a great AST-62 that was a dead ringer for this MIJ Strat, just with the extra bit on the headstock (an '85 IIRC). The Tokais were far better than the Fenders. I walked in the shop with cash in hand to buy a US RI Fender and didn't find any of the six they had to my liking. Disappointed, I started to walk out (and we all know how hard that is when you've got $$ burning a hole in your pocket for a change) when the owner suggested I try the Tokai. It blew the Fender stuff away, which surprised me very much. When I asked him the price, I was even more knocked out-$275 out the door.

FYI Valley Arts are owned by Gibson. Robert your Valley Arts Tele looks like the type played by Larry Carlton in the 80's.

I have a 80s Jazz Sound which was their copy of the Jazz Bass and it pales BIG TIME in comparison to the AV '62 reissue.

I made the mistake of parting with mine, I really regret that, and I still know the guy who has it and wont sell it back to me. It just sits in his wardrobe most of the time too!

Tokai Tele vs Custom shop/ Japan vs The World

I think Fender would be hard pressed to make a product that compares to the older mij Tokais. It would be foolish, incorrect and naive to think that Japanese guitars, mass produced or handcrafted, are inferior to any other brand. The nation has earned it's nickname "the superachievers" because they perfect products invented elsewhere. They have established themselves as the best manufacturers of several complex products (automobiles, electronics, steel, plastic etc). They have accomplished this by the implementation of a corporate/labour work ethic that is the envy of all North American/ European Manufacturers. Their attention to detail is legendary. Their understanding and appreciation of fine objets d'art and old world craftsmanship drove antique and collectible markets skyward due to Japanese investors purchasing anything collectible. What makes anyone think that Japan's guitars would be anything less than the best? I own a Tokai breezysound, among other Custom Shop Teles-The breezysound is just a better sounding guitar. It "nails " the twang perfectly because it is made by people who are the best at replicating and perfecting.

If one came up cheap (lets face it, i cant see how they could have huge resale value) I would definately consider it. They just have a cool vibe to them.
TOTALLY different guitar and company. The newer Tokais pale in every respect (those that I've played) to the 1985/6 and earlier ones.
