Not sure...
I cannot recall if I bought the acoustic or the electric first. The acoustic I still have, it's an Ibanez Artist. The electric was a Hofner Strat, I think. Left it somewhere in '76 and never saw it again. Joined the army the year after and when I came back I started working and as soon as I got enough paychecks I bought the '79 Strat. Which I still have.

I have mine -- a toploading three-color sunburst Tele purchased from Guitar Center in San Francisco in the summer of 1984. It's never had a case, soft or otherwise, but the finish is okay. I strum it occasionally, but I never plug it in anymore.

My First Guitar was
a Christmas gift-Sears Silvertone Electric-which basically self destructed after a few years. The first guitar I actually purchased with my own hard earned dollars was an Epiphone acoustic, which I bought in 1975. I still have it and every other guitar I have purchased since then. I can't bear to part with them, and as a result, I have a lot of guitars!

Wish I did
I bought a brand new Gibson J-50 factory second for about $250 in 1973. Played it for nearly 10 years--just long enough to get it broke in--and sold it. Durn. :? Also wish I still had the '76 Martin D-35 I sold to buy an Ovation Custom Legend because it was a better fingerpick guitar.

I still have my first guitar but not the first I bought
My grandparents sent my parents the money to buy me a guitar for Christmas one year. My mom bought me a small bodied classical made by the Suzuki Violin Company.
I don't have the first guitar I bought myself. It was a '68 Goldtop Les Paul I bought in 1982 for $275. I sold it in 1984 for $375. Doh! |

Sure I do!
It's an acoustic Ibanez R3000, bought 10 years ago. It’s name is Sakura
I write all my stuff in that guitar. It's funny. Sometimes I’m just playing around with my Tele when something gets my attention. I’d do it twice, and If I like it, I switch to Sakura right away!!!! I just can’t do it without her.

I do
It is a Washburn acoustic. I loved it at the time. Electric guitars were like another planet to me at the time. Now I never play my acoustic. I have absolutely no emotional bond to it, strange, huh? I'm not a great player, but I'm even worse on the acoustic, just never sounds right... I'm considering unloading it, but haven't had the energy to try 8)

Long gone - and I'm glad of it...
My first? - a Vox Ace 2 - a very basic Stratoid, that cost around £35 in 1966. It had a clubby neck with no obvious truss-rod, certainly not an adjustable one. Crappy pickups which looked a lot like the very definitely non-crappy Tele neck pickup.
Intolerable tuners - which meant I was virtually never in tune - a problem that was compounded by a disasterous vibrato. It's a miracle I carried on playing after an introduction like that! I'm glad it is gone - I can't even remember where it went, although I must have had it for around 7 years - good riddance.

I do, I do...
First one I bought with my own gig money- a new '63 Tele, custom Duco black finish.
First amp I bought was a b/f Blonde Bandmaster piggyback, traded it in on a Dual Showman and Fender tank reverb the same year I got the Tele. Still got both of those. Still got the first fx I bought as well- a Maestro FuzzTone. -Michael Charter Member S. Texas He-Man Emoticon Haters Local #316

My coolest effect ever was not an effect box at all. It was a big Sony stereo reel tape recorder, with built in amp. That one doubled as my first guitar amp. (We could only afford one real amp, so we bought one for the bass, because there was no way the Sony could handle it.) Plugging the guitar into one the inputs and cranking the input volume all the way up gave the purest fuzz I have ever heard. Of course I blew the speakers, and probably the amp as well, and so I threw it away eventually. But I wish I had kept it and gotten someone to take that preamp stage out and make an effects unit of it. Geir :)

Thank God no...
It was a terrible Harmony arch top..with a huge crack in it..probably from the '50s and I imagine it was nice at one time, "gift" from a "friend"...gave it back after a few weeks, bought a used Audition (Woolworths) electric with a little Kay SS amp..they both fell apart after a "gig" in the "damp". First playable guitar was a little Decca nylon folkie..which I still have.. it's slowly coming unglued so I don't play it any more. Then on to the MM Bass rebuild(see the first Fender thred) While it was a pain to deal with all this at the time, it has given me a real appreciation of the low cost good quality stuff that is available now.

Wish I had a better recollection....
of the mistakes in judgement I'm about to describe. First guitar I'd ever had was a Guild M-20 all mahogony acoustic given to me by my cousin around 1965..... don't remember what I did with it, whereabouts unknown. The first guitar I ever bought was a Japanese, three pick-up electric in or around 1967 for $20...... whereabouts unknown. My cousin gave me a Guild Starfire IV around 1968 or 69, I in turn loaned it to a "friend" who upon request for its return several years later told me.....whereabouts unknown. In early '71 my Father bought me a new '70 Gibson SG Standard, which I sold in 1976. That year I bought my first acoustic with "my own" money, an Alvarez I still have, and about a year later I bought my '74 Tele Custom for $150, which I still and will always have. I still hold out hope I'll be able to locate the old SG, someone recently reminded me who I sold it to.....the search is on!

Heh, heh, heh...
Geir-
I remember my old man being just about beside himself when I brought the Maestro home. "Why the HELL would anyone pay 40 bucks for something to make a perfectly good amp sound like it was broke?" were his exact words. He was sure I'd lost my mind... -Michael Charter Member S. I did not actually buy it but..
When I was 8 years old (1967) I got a new Fender Mustang (66 model) and a 66 Vibrochamp amp for Christmas in which I still have both. Was told by my Father that if I learned to play, he would buy me a "real" guitar and amp. (keyword "real" LOL). So, after one lesson and a Mel Bay book, I beacame quite the player in the next year and being true to his word as usual, I got a 68 Stratocaster and a Twin reverb the next Christmas. Kept them for a bout three years and I traded the Strat to my Brother for his 68 Tele but kept my Twin. Sold the Tele several years later and bought another Strat which I kept until the late 80's and then switched back to Tele. Still using the original Twin and for kicks, I play the Champ (blackface) for old times sake..
Now I have owned many other guitars during this period but as you can see, they have come and gone and the Fender's stay. I do have a 75 model Kustom amp in Aqua Blue metalflake that I bought during the Commodore era. It is a 150 model with a 2-12 cabinet. Pretty cool actually and sounds pretty clean. I have been offered good money for my Mustang (dakota red) and the amps but that would be like selling a family member. I have a 10 year old wanting them anyways so I guess I'll repeat what my Dad done for me many years ago. -Craig |

My Dad bought me a '58 Gretsch New Yorker archtop acoustic when I was about 13 to take guitar lessons. Still have it, and it is a beauty.
I bought my first electric when I was 16, a '65 Mustang. Still have it, and occasionally gig with it. I also bought an Ampeg Reverberocket at the same time, but have no idea what ever happened to it. It was the 60's you know, man. |

No, but
A buddy of mine has it (I gave it to him). I can see it any time I desire ( I don't, really). A '66 Harmony Rocket (red, of course) that I purchased from my cousin, along with a '66 Fender Champ, for $50 around 1982. Talk about feedback abuse!
