String ferrells...before or after?

Ok, I'm in th emiddle of making my own tele(my first!!!) and I was wondering if anyone can advise. I have a friend who is a cabinet maker who is going to finish it in Nitro-Cellulose Lacquer. My question is:- Do I put the string ferrels in before this or after? Also does it matter if the neck pocket and pickup routing get laquered?
Any help woul be most appriciated :)

I usually put the actual metal part in after the paint, but have the holes set before. I don't care so much about he pickup routes, but try to have a clean endge but not much finish in the neck pocket. No one ever told me if there was a right way though. I just do it this way.

The ferrules go in after the finish is completely done.. The way they go in is like this: you put the ferrule in the hole (which should be a little too small b/c of the finish). Then you heat the ferrule with a soldering iron, which will melt the lacquer and allow you to push the ferrule all the way in. Then the lacquer will dry and hold the ferrule in place.. I'm pretty sure that if you search the board for this topic, a comprehensive guide will come up, prolly by Rob.

I use a paint stick, so most of the neck pocket is covered over....

Fender used to paint the pockets in the early days, though....

Ferrules go in after....

If you want to see an example of building a tele, step-by-step, click on my WWW link below.

Not all nitro is the same. Furniture laquer may not be good on a tele, too soft, I believe. Talk to your guy about this first. May be worth an e mail or two to Bill at ReRanch. You sure don't want a sticky guitar.
