Stolen from another forum (not nearly as cool as the TDPRI)

Old thread, but I'm pretty sure this is a Photoshopped pic. Stephen Carpenter (guitarist for Deftones) is heavily sponsored by ESP, and has like a million sig models. I wish he had a Tele! This is a pic, probably from the same show.

Low A
If you want to hear a 7 stringer with a low A, go to www.fosterguitars.com and listen to luthier Jimmy Foster play his 7 string.
I bought one of his St.Charles models 7 string. He also builds solid bodies, more like a strat. |

I don't know the history of the original pic so it may or may not be PS'd, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if ESP built that guitar. Love the Deftones though! Very unique sound in a very crowded genre. They do a lot of custom work (especially for artists) and have put out some great traditional, not-so traditional, and everything in between guitars. Their original Eclipse line was a Tele'esque guitar: arched top, neck-through, sometimes a trem, various pickup combos, et cetera. It's now a LP'esque model though.
Lots of companies making 7 stringers these days. As above there are several ESP Stephen Carpenter models. Ibanez has been mass producing them for years (the Universe came out in the late 80's). My favourite has to be the Soloway Swan. Definitely not meant for metal per-se, but no doubt would work just fine: www.solowayguitars.com Gimmie a 6 string with his new "fat" neck, Filtertrons, Skyway trem and I'd be perfectly happy for life. The 27" scale length, wide nut, and fat profile would probably be perfect for my big Sasquatch hands. :D |

Stef Carpenter is the guitarist for the band Deftones, and he gets his guitars from ESP. In fact, he has a whole line! This particular guitar is a custom, and can be seen in the gallery on their website. (So obviously, my post above was completely wrong haha)

I play a Danelectro Mod 7 (couldn't get farther from metal) with a low B, and I love it. Still trying to deal with chording (B min barre chord sounds cool with open 7th string) but when I play my tele (copy) I find myself looking for the estra string sometimes.

well i'll just say that the deftones may be a heavy band, but they can be very classic in style and tone. some of their stuff is just beautiful. i feel like there are some older people on this forum that may be quick to shrug this off as "kids with their heavy music", but the deftones really have been doing some amazing stuff. they're also fender fans as well; the singer played a butterscotch/blonde strat with a tortoise p/g last time i saw them. they've always played fender basses. and i think the problem with stephen carpenter goes only as far as his sponsorship (just my suspicion). deftones definitely get falsely lumped into the "nu metal" crowd, which is a shame.

and steph has been sponsored for a really long time :) he does like them though, that's obvious. regardless, it was weird to see chino NOT playing an sg, but i'm pretty sure he played a strat most of the time - if not exclusively - when they played at austin music hall in 06. it was a great show too. restored my faith in them live after seeing lots of not-so-great performances on the web over the years. of course, seeing them on the white pony tour in 2000 was easily the best time seeing them.
