Jerry Donahue signature MIJ
Hi,
I have a chance to get my hands on a Fender Japan Jerry Donahue Model. I'm very interested due to the the fat neck (V profile?) which feels very nice. 1 problem though. The seller says he's not sure wether the body is the original JD body. It is a vintage white body with pearloid double bindings. So, my question is wether this could be an original body based on the mentioned color and bindings. Anyone that can help out? Thanks in advance, Last edited by art027; December 23rd, 2006 at 01:55 PM. Reason: spelling |

My memory
I think that the JD came in either sunburst or some reddish color.
Your description sounds like the body is from a variant of the MIJ 62 Tele Custom RI (They had a vintage white and another black version with perloid double body binding, gold hardware, and a painted-to-match headstock on the neck) Maybe 50th anniversary stickers on the back of the headstock?

Pearloid bindings? Definitely not a JD. I'm not sure I've ever heard of a vintage white model with pearloid bindings either. (Just to be certain, vintage white is somewhere between the color of vanilla and banana pudding. Sometimes the term is misused).
There was an MIJ model in the 90s that was white with gold pearloid bindings.

I think everyone had this nailed so far. That 90's Tele Custom was the first thing I thought of when you mentioned this. But here's something to think about; that body has become somewhat desireable and I've seen a few sell at some pretty high prices. But beyond that the MIJ JD neck is wildly popular. I was following one on eBay about a year ago hoping to score it, but wasn't willing to spend the $325 or so that it sold for!!
Not sure what the price is on the guitar you're after, but it's definitely got some bankable parts on it.

Thanks Guys,
Yes, it must defenately be a JD neck attached to a 62 ri body. Unfortunately some previous owner did all sorts of mods like new frets, all gold hardware is gone, not the original pu's, there's even a middle pu routing. It was the huge neck that atracted me mostly, felt really great. It looks kinda cool but i'm not sure if i want it to be honest. The deal would be a trade with my Tradition JR with Bill Bores b-bender. Now that's a really great guitar, cheap but very cool. the only reason to part with it is because i will soon receive an EBMM Albert Lee with b/g benders. Thanks, |

There Is No Such Thing As A White Jerry Donahue, buyer Beware!!
Pull The Neck Off Of It And Look In The Pocket If It Is A Bound Body It Will Say 62 Jd Or 62 Tl Jd,also The End Of The Peghead Will Have The Jd Initials On It! If The Pocket Does Not Have Jd Initials On It, It Is A 62 Reissue.and No Way Did The Jd Come With Pearloid Binding!! It's A Parts Caster Hands Down, also The Jd Came In Black, transparent Blue, red, and Sunburst.the Blue One Is Rare As Hensteeth To Find.the Donahue Model Was A Hopped Up 62 Re-issue Usually A Maple Neck, but There Were A Few Rosewood Necks,if You Buy It Make Sure You Know What It Is,it Still Could Be A Nice Guitar Just Not A Jd As Advertised |

That white w/ Pearloid binding & gold hardware Tele is some sort of a Japaneese 'anniversary' model.... a really nice guitar (a pall has one) & it sounds great & plays great.
The "JD" Tele that I have is sunburst but it also came in black, blue, & red...all having a cream (might be white) color binding & white pickguard. They have a hot Duncan bridge pickup and a strat neck pickup. This model also incorporates a 5 position switch that somehow uses a couple 64K resistors to vary the tone & position #4 kicks the neck pup out of phase.
