What is the definition of a guitarist? This seems like one of the "Telecaster" or "Tele" discussions without the Fender company for an anchor point.

I hope that it wasn't in order...

Tom Morello in front of Les Paul? HaHaHa.

Morello couldn't hold Les Paul's pick!

Same goes for Mr. Cobain...what a joke!

No Terry Kath....shame! :(

Not going to give my opinion yet, but...

I counted, and I've seen 53 of the guitarists on the list in concert. I would have guessed the number would be higher.

Keith Richards higher than Jeff Beck

Give me a break - never mind Jimmy "Sloppiest of All Time' Page. And Duane Allman number 2? What were they smoking? Duane was great buy not that great.

Jerry Garcia number 13 and still one more than Jeff Beck! Ludicrous!

John Frusciante number 18 and Les Paul back in the 40-somethings? Youv'e got to be kidding?

PETE TOWNSHEND 50 and DANNY GATTON 63? THEM's FIGHTIN' WoRDS!

Yuck

What was their criteria?

What is Joan Jett doing on the list - did they need a chick?

Interesting list but...

I read the list pretty fast but I think I saw no Chet, no Albert Lee and no Billy Gibbons.

At least they didn't miss James Burton.

Neil Young? Good artist but a top 100 guitar player?

It's Rolling Stone......

Yawn. What do you expect...they lost it when they moved to NY. Getting worked up about their 100 gtrists is like arguing about the old Playboy readers Jazz Poll. You geezers remember that? Nice to see Fahey, Jansch, Vestine, Ike T. and Sonic Smith on the same list though.

Who came up with this?

Admittedly, I haven't heard some of the newer "rock" people. Just off of the top of my head, I can think of Merle Travis, Danny Gatton, and any of the Hellecasters. Where are they? Joan Jett?

Like I said in "read and laugh".

It's a shame they don't sell it as a newspaper anymore
so I could use it to wipe my a$$. Rolling Stone has been
Plastic for at least 3 decades and lemme tell ya somethin'
Guitar Player ain't too far behind, I'm seriously debating if I wanna spend 20 bucks to read their rag for another year. Did any of you see the guy in the fishnet stockings?....ain't that a man!

Oh, well...

....they got #1 right. Beyond that the list is a joke. I'd like to have been in the room when they determined the order, just to try to figure the logic. Or was a dartboard used????

Me thinks some confusion ....

has occured here. RS is saying " greatest guitarist"..which most of the folks on this list define (perhaps a bit narrowly) as "technical vituroso"; if the heading was "influental guitarist" (which is what I beleive they ment..) the list holds up much better....keeping in mind that RS is primary a Rock magazine, and this is probaly the opinion of a small group of people,(or a large mindless mass) Eitherway it's always unwise to rely on others to validate your choices.

In the preface to the piece(on the contents page), RS says "Here they are, the 100 guitarists the rock world couldn't live without".
Ok, so, where is Duane Eddy? Not even there??
If it's about most influential, then Eddie Van Halen can NOT be #70!!
The rock world couldn't live without D. Boon of the Minutemen? No offense to the late Mr. Boon, but I think we'd have made it!
Somebody tell me how Jack White is greater or more influential than George Harrison?
And I'm truly amazed that they think there have been 62 guitarists "greater" than Danny Gatton( including Zoot Horn Rollo at #62?). And as much as I love and revere Duane Allman, #2 might be a stretch using RS's criteria.
No Duane Eddy??????????

Rolling Stone stopped being relevant to anything about 30 years ago. It's about as important as, say, Tiger Beat. Why get upset about their idiotic lists?

Where's Muddy?

Muddy Waters wasn't listed! I wonder is anyone there knows that their magazine was named after a Muddy Water's song. My 18 year old saxophone playing daughter couldn't believe he wasn't listed! She couldn't believe some of those they did list.

I'm Old Enough To Remember

a time when they (Rolling Stone) were pretty "right on" when it came to this stuff. But that was years ago and I'm older now and things have changed and I don't always like it and it's too early for a bourbon and...

The simple fact that Eddie Van Halen was #70 shows the ignorance level of the author.

These lists are way beyond stupid....

Ridiculous... can you possibly put out a list titled "Greatest guitarist of all time"? What could you possibly use as the criteria?

Most influential?
Most technical?
Most Nimble?
Blahty-blah?
Blahty?
Blahty-blahty-blah?

Stoopid...
